Yes, your right, also known as "The Big House". He also had the "Noah's Ark" in Speke and "The Little Woodman" at the bottom of Hill Street/Dock Road. Joey Singleton another Liverpool fighter had the Woodman after my dad.
I think McGowan got a job at Glasgow airport on retiring.
By the way, the Caldwell fight is on Youtube, he was unlucky as well. He had to fight a peak Jofre in Brazil.

Thank's I'll pass that onto him. :good By the way I saw your post about him getting you into boxing. It was a great fight to get you started. I don't remember it but I do remember The Rose fight vaguely and most definitely the second Clark fight.

The 2nd Clark fight was a fantastic opportunity to hang em up after a great performance, especially coming off the back of the Senin disappointment.

I remember the 2nd McGowan fight vividly as much for the reaction of my grandad (Alan being his favourite fighter) as for the actual fight itself...I remember grandad laughing and applauding at the end...fantastic fight.

Rudkin - Clark II -- brilliant climax to the fight, there is a lot to be said for 15 rounders, they sort the men from the boys.

He had a pub down by Mile End, think it was the Prince of Wales. He had a sportshop in Bethnal Green road before that. I think he is working on the bins now.

I wanted to go to this fight, I was only 7 but me dad wouldn't let me, he knew it was going to be a tough one. First time I saw that last round was about 1985 when I was 21. I'm not ashamed to say that it brought a tear to my eye. I was glad he hadn't taken me. Bit too brutal for a 7 year old seeing your dad in a battle like that.
