Good post. I disagree a fair bit. Jack Johnson, I actually put him 3 a lot of the time. He's a hard one to rate though, during his reign he was very dominant, but against poor opposition, beat some great fighters, like Jeanette and Langford, but before they were at their best. But he did get to the top on both sides of the colorline, and he up a good fight when up against it with Willard, which is something I like to see. Lennox Lewis, I don't massively disagree with that ranking, but I'd put him higher, and I think there's a decent case for it. He was the best of a strong era. Jeffries, probably had the best reign pre-Joe Louis. It depends how you rate his era, some people hold it in high regard, it's hard to say. I disagree on Wlad Vs Vitali, Wlad was the one who actually unified and took on the highest rated guys. Mayweather and Leonard, both get overrated, but both had really good careers, the main thing that lowers their rankings is their bull****. While he gets overrated elsewhere I think Mayweather get underrated here, he was undefeated against a lot of great fighters, across a lot of weights. (Not a contender for the GOAT though) Pac-Man, he did go up an insane amount of weight divisions, but the use of questionable substances cheapens that achievement. A very good fighter, but yeah gets overrated massively by some, and doesn't belong in the top 10 P4P Archie Moore, people putting him over Charles is just clueless, he fought and beat a lot of great fighters, and I think he deserves credit for longevity. He was very good but does get overrated.
Why do you think Wills is overrated? I think he tends to get overlooked. He almost certainly should have been the champion for a period.
Sonny Liston A minor great who has developed a cult following all out of proportion to his accomplishments. He beat Patterson twice in 1 each, and Patterson was a great, but an extremely minor, beatable great with the worst chin in heavyweight championship boxing history. Williams, Foley, Machon, and Valdez were all good, solid guys, but all very beatable and oft beaten. Of course, he quit twice against Ali. Larry Holmes OPENLY ducked Page and Thomas, and bragged about it. Defended against some of the worst garbage to pollute the division. Arguably lost lost Norton, Witherspoon, and Williams. Not only did he not try to unify, he contributed to the fragmenting of titles by picking the IBF belt out of the gutter and giving it credibility. Tried to break Marciano's record with an easy fight against a LHW and failed.
Same question though, Joe was what? 22 in the first fight. An absolute killer at 22 no doubt but he need that first loss to become who he became. Is 22 y/o Joe Louis better than Zaire Foreman, or Tyson in the first Holyfield fight? It's debatable, but I tend to think not.
Agree with Bowe for sure. Lots of others like that I just tend to reduce them by like 1 ranking. For example; Tyson great. Nope. Very very good. Same with Holmes. One guy that is hard to place is Evander. Great cruiser. As a heavy---very good. He just lost too many fights. By the same token, he fought an absolute ton of good fighters from the first Qawi bout on. So not surprising his arm was not the one raised all the time. But as a heavy he was only making a few defenses, at best, before getting a loss. Just a few too many losses & maybe going 2-1 or 3-0 against Bowe & 2-0 against a Moorer tip the scales.
Yes! Certainly better than Tyson at that point. Tyson of the Douglas fight is debateable, (although I find Louis the better) the Holyfield version not so much.
In my opinion where this post falls down is where the author states Hagler was prime when he lost to Leonard...unless I'm mis-reading the post?
Marcel Cerdan Ricardo Lopez Orlando Canizales Jeff Chandler Too Sharp Johnson Jack Dempsey Georges Carpentier Charley Burley Jack Johnson Donnie Nietes Aaron Pryor Some of these I still consider to be ‘great’ but nowhere near as great as many seem to.
I actually think Tyson is grossly underrated on forums because he’s disgustingly overrated by casuals. Larry Holmes has gone the other way; said to be underrated for decades, people now over compensate and overrate him.
