How come some boxers always have belittling their opponent as part of the bulid-up? Floyd jr. and Ali comes to mind. Whereas others are never in conflict before they step foot into the ring? Arguello never talked ****, I never heard of Pac man being lured into a shouting matches with opponents.

Ali did it cos he knew how to get publicity and the media's attention which makes fights bigger and more profitable. I think Floyd does it cos he's a genuine ****...

Do you really think Ali did it JUST to get publicity and media attention? I think there was more to it than that - I think he also used it to try to psych out the opposition. I also think there were occasions when he did it with such bad taste (i.e. with Frazier) that your description of Mayweather also applied to Ali.

I think it's getting out of hand now. Either some of these fighters have got no class, they're ****ing stupid or they're misguided. I find some of these buildups embarrassing and unnecessary. Maybe I'm just old school!

Completely agree, AlFrancis. Give me an Arguello or a Norton over a Mayweather Jr/Toney/Ali any day of the week.

Yeah he didn't do it exclusivley for publicity there was also that mental game he tried on his opponents...totally agree regarding Frazier tho he was a real **** to him for no real reason but generally his antics were funny "If he talks jive i'll take him in 5" and all that

But i agree with the OP i pefer opponents who dont talk **** like Marciano who when asked his predictions on upcoming fights would just say "I'll do my best"

Where did I say that I don't "rate" Mayweather Jr/Toney/Ali as fighters?

Where did I say I "rate" them on how they go about their daily lives?

I just generally prefer boxers who don't shout off at the mouth over those who do.

I think that you have either misread, or over-reacted to my post.

It used to be that fighters concentrated on preparing to fight and conducted themselves with the dignity, before and after the fight, that befits an activity that can kill you. The promoters and managers are the ones responsible for building the gate, for selling the fights. Let them talk trash. Let fighters fight.
Personally, while I respect the courage Ali showed in the Frazier fights, I have no use for him. I resent his making pro-wrestling antics on the part of boxers acceptable. To the point where it seems there are many "fighters" that spend more time choreographing their ring walks and shaking their asses than they do actually learning how to box.

Better question is,why do you care about how boxers conduct themselves prior to a fight? Is it not enough that they're prepared and willing to sacrifice their own well being for your entertainment? Now you want to control them and tell them how to behave? :patsch

As great a sport as this can be,there is absolutely no doubt that a large percentage of it's fanbase consists of insecure ***gots that like to live vicariously through others.

I'm sick of loud, ****ish, belligerant, arrogant, buffooniish fighters..I prefer the Arguello/Patterson/Louis/Marciano types any day.

Patterson was one of a kind..no one today seems to want to emulate him...to their loss.
