Quarry against Norton and even Quarry against Zanon. Even though he won the fight, Jerry was a depleted shell of his former self and was lucky that Zanon had limited whiskers.

Sugar Ray Robinson. He literally flew too close to the sun.

Archie Moore. Moore won the NSAC belt just 2 weeks before what was supposed to be Marcianos last fight. If he'd done nothing he'd probably be recognized as the HW champ of the world for subsequent HW fights like what happened to Frazier. But Moore pushed hard for Marciano to give him a shot. Moore loses to Marciano they don't get around to naming a champ for another year and Moore loses to a 21 year old Floyd Patterson.

Mikey Garcia, Bob Foster, probably a lot more + anyone who tried to make a comeback when they were past it.

I think his team cashed out on him.

They probably saw the writing on the wall that he was slipping. I can’t imagine after the Glenwood Brown fight that they would think it was a good idea to have him move up in weight again to face a fast guy like Norris who also had power.

Cristano Espana was the mandatory and always going to be an awful matchup, so they figured they might as well get a bigger payday before facing him.

How about Bobby Chacon taking a cash out fight against Boom Boom Mancini? That was seen as a no-hope car crash from the moment it was announced.

Obviously, Michael Spinks against Tyson was an Icarus moment too.

Eddie Mustafa Muhammad's attempt to go heavyweight against Renaldo Snipes was a bizarre and yet fascinating adventure. All I remember is Eddie looking like a bloated penguin and Snipes yelling "You ain't gonna win a round!" and laughing at him.

And my namesake/avatar Roughhouse Fischer getting his big shot against #1 rated Michael Dokes on the Ali-Holmes undercard and getting beat up so bad that the ref actually said "Stay down, Tom" in between knockdowns out of humanitarian concern.

Unless I missed its mention - Arguello taking on Pryor - a dream that turned into the worst nightmare for Alexis.

If you fly too low - you will fall into the water.
If you fly too high (too close to the sun) - your wings made with the help of wax will melt.

After "4 years of rule" Willard got too close to the sun.

    Marlon Starling fighting Michael Nunn.
If Salvador had moved up to 135, potentially he would be mentioned.

    More recently, Canelo vs Bivol.

A prime insanely skillful natural LHW was too much for Canelo, he wasn't no 36 year old Kovalev.

I would say also Hagler orthodoxing Leonard for few rounds instead of going immediately southpaw and acceptin' all Leonard conditions for a bigger check played a pivotal role in the outcome of the match unfortunately...
