This is true, though many times it isn't manifested in boxing but is instead manifested in military service. Many people would be surprised at the sheer number of individuals from upper middle class and upper class families that are in the military. For example the founder of Black Water, the infamous mercenary firm, came from an exceedingly wealthy family and became a Navy SEAL.

It is all relative. I remember when I was in high school here in Miami a bunch of kids from the Overtown and Liberty City areas were bitching in class about how bad they had it. We had this one kid in class who grew up in Nagorno-Karabakh, a region of Azerbaijan claimed by Armenians, during their civil war. These kids just kept on complaining and complaining until finally he had enough and told everyone about how for six years of his childhood he was in a war zone and how his city in particular was surrounded by soldiers for three months, shelled and starved. Everyone in class pretty much shut the **** up about how "tough" their upbringing was.

Yeah, from what I hear Youngstown is a shithole but it appears he has a supportive family and they had enough.

That's what he likes people to think. Remember, it's "cool" to be from "the ghetto".

Yeah trust me, it seriously irritates me when all these idiot London boys talk about how difficult it is growing up in their 'ends' is because there's a few low-level drug dealing scumbags.

    Is that right?

I remember reading an article in the Ring mag where the writer said that at one point in leonard's childhood he was homeless and that he used to pick food from garbage.

Wasn't there talk of Andre Ward actually growing up in the suburbs?

I dunno, can't remember exactly, may have just been hearsay.

He grew up in San Francisco, not Oakland, and then his family moved to a suburb of Oakland (can't remember which one - Hayward maybe), although even the suburbs of Oakland aren't great.

Either way, I wouldn't say Ward had a rough upbringing.

I didn't go back through the whole thread, but has Marco Antonio Barrera come up yet? I remember they played up that whole angle for Barrera-Morales.
