J,yes there are exceptions to every rule.If i had to pick the most likely
    unbeatables in their championship reigns.
Benny Leonard LW,ruled over the greatest array of great lightweights for seven years.
Henry Armstrong,as a featherweight was a force of nature.
Ezzard Charles, as a LH champion was as dominate a LH champ in modern times.
Joe Louis-ruled for 13 years, and sooner or later, Joe caught up with you, and sayonora!
Ray Robinson- who i saw several times as a welterweight, and it is cruel to compare any welterweight with the great Robinson I saw...
Willie Pep- prior to his near fatal plane crash was virtually unhittable as a featherweight. good enough to whip the great lightweight boxer Willie Joyce...
Harry Greb- before he lost his eyesight in one eye beat all 160 pounders before him, and LH and Heavyweights to boot....

I would love to see somebody try to beat RJJ at 160-168. Im not saying hes invincible or anything, but athletically he is the most gifted fighter I have ever seen.

And Monzon would get beat at MW, people are being too nice to him

the way he was pushed to the brink by griffith, briscoe and valdez make me question his ability to remain dominant in a better era

Hagler is versatile enough to beat him. SRR could beat anybody on any given night. Even Hopkins would give Monzon a very tough fight

Monzon was great but he does not host a skillset that is unbeatable

:huhBriscoe was one of his very best performances. Sure, he got hurt, but he recovered beautifully and dominated the fight from there.

As for the Valdez fights, both took place years after Monzon had been shot twice by his wife, and he was on the downside anyway by then. Compare his early 70's performances with his performances around that time. In fact, the rematch with Griffith also took place after the shooting, just after the shooting, actually. He had a tune-up against a relative nobody before taking on Griffith in what would be the last great effort of the latter's career. Their first fight is a better indicator.

I think Monzon is every bit as good as advertised. One of the all time great ring generals. One of the best at long distance fighting, timing and 15 round pacing. His mean streak made sure he was capable of dealing with anything else anyone had to dish out as well.

Les Darcy was a medium sized fish in a small pond. Big deal. How much footage have you seen of Darcy? I have 20 fights of Monzon on tape , largely against top contenders. Darcy was a classic "could have been", a category to which I give very little credit. He just might have been exposed at 24, like many prodigies were in this sport. Furthermore, the absense of extensive footage of the guy leads the restless Classicist mind to wander in fantastical imagination. It's ridiculous to contend, given emprical evidence, that he would compete against one of the most seasoned, and documented, middle champs of all time.

And Stanley Ketchell looks like a low rate toughman contender. Seriously.

good post but as for briscoe, i was thinking more their earlier draw (years previous) than the rematch.

Man, I like Gomez...But have never thought of him as this unbeatable monster that many regard him as???

Jeff Fenech, Pac, MAB & Morales should all be able to give him a good fight and in a series I believe he would drop a couple...personally I wouldn't favor him over any of these 4...I am sure there are others who could beat him as well. I like Gomez, I just don't see unbeatable when I watch him!
