Just noticed the thread about boxers that were never world class but made good money, so thought i'd do an opposite one.

All things are relative, but from what I can gather, neither Finnegan brother was a rich man,but IMO easily world class.Id say lots of our 60s boxers come into the same category,eg Winstone,Rudkin,Mcgowan.
But before Prescott beat Khan, saw on TV the house he lived in,and I think this showed another level completely.Reckon a Latin American or Asian can be world class and be poor by our standards.

Ken Buchanan almost gave up the sport in frustration at the lack of money in the sport in the UK in the late 60s/early 70s. And yes he was not that smart money wise, thus left the sport the 'cliché' broke fighter. Sadly having to try and make ends meet in 'unlicensed' fights, after (rightly) being refused a licence by the British Boxing Board of Control...

Making money isn't (and shouldn't be) about how much skill you have, or how good you are.
You have to draw and entertain the crowd.

    He made money.
Maybe managers/promoters ripped him off, or he squandered it. Maybe he gave a lot of money away to guys from the neighbourhood.
But I'm sure he got some BIG paydays.

Ricardo Lopez was fighting for peanuts in a lot of those title defenses. He said 1 time he would have made more money as a jockey than a boxer.
