Grunting when you punch is almost as unmanly and embarrassing as packing glass in your whiskers. Refs really should deduct points from boxers for grunting and DQ their asses if they persist with it. I'm not joking about that either.
Go to any boxing gym in the world from amateurs to professional and guess what.....boxers make noises when there throwing shots. You guys are making yourselves look stupid.
This is the meaning of the term. Also it is what is taught in Martial arts when attacking with force. Bruce Lee was the most notorious of folks to use the Kiai . A lot of folks in other sports use it as well: Boxers, MMA, Tennis, Shot-put, Javelin etc. Japanese: 気合, /ˈkiːaɪ/) is a Japanese term used in martial arts for the short shout uttered when performing an attacking move. Traditional Japanese dojo generally use single syllables beginning with a vowel. The concept has become a notable part of Asian martial arts in popular culture, especially in martial arts films, in writing often rendered in variants such as Hi-yah!, Aiyah!, Eeee-yah!, or Hyah!
I can't stand guys that do this. Luckily there are no really good boxers who do it, so I don't have to see it that much. I forget who it was, some prospect years ago, who used to bark like a dog when he punched. People put up with it while he was on his way to the top, but on the way down a commentator to his fight said "That habit gets more annoying with every fight he loses."
A common issue with people early in training is holding your breath when you throw/block etc, fighters get told to make a noise or shout when they throw a punch to make sure they are exhaling and not holding your breath - as a kind of reminder, some people only need it at the start until they get ther breathing under control, others develop something resembling a tick where they unconsciously make a noise/shout when they throw because it's just become a habit, some people may shout more than others, but I understand where it comes from and it doesn't annoy me personally
I fought. I usually "psssshhhh" while punching, but I find myself grunting with a "ah" while punching when in heated exchange. You can tell some of you have never fought.
