Which boxers have you gotten your styles from. For me it would be: Defense: Floyd Mayweather, Pernell Whitaker, Mike tyson, Joan Guzman and James Toney. Offense: Manny Pacquiao, Floyd Mayweather, Roy Jones, Mike Tyson, Sugar Ray Leonard Footwork & Angles: Manny Pacquiao and Mike Tyson Training: I Try to have a work ethic of Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao I have a lot of Pacman and Floyd but then again they are my era. And I enjoy watching high quality videos instead of the ones back in the day.
alot of those guys i wouldnt have chosen to model and imo someone should never model. :think reading this will help, http://www.expertboxing.com/boxing-styles/whats-your-fighting-style Pacquiao became the first pacquiao, tyson became the first tyson, mayweather became the first or well second mayweather due to his father being first with that style. etc etc majority of those guys make mistakes but they get away with it because of physical abilities, like speed, reflex etc etc.
i think it also depends on your size and stature. its only natural to look for a role model and a prototype, in spite of whether its good or bad for you. for example, a taller, aspiring is obviously going to look up to say, the vitali klitschko. whereas a shorter stockier heavyweight will look to tyson. its all well and good being the first 'joe bloggs', but i would say alot of boxers start out emulating one hero or another. imo
I think you need to develop a system rather then learn to stand like someone else. The hows and whys are more important then the way things look. You can learn a lot from breaking down a style but find your own way. Every fight I have is different - why pigeon hole yourself. But I can always tell who i've been watching in the build up. Maybe someone else couldn't but I can.
i love the style of aaron pryor but i havent got the speed agility or conditioning to even thinking about fighting like that, nor is it the most technically sound when you can be hit at any point.
i like to pick bits up from different fighters but try to stick to what feels natural and what is most effective for me both offensively and defensively
good article. its true. you only do what works without thinking about it, its not performing arts. A person's movement and strategy is based on how their brain is wired and the body only moves in a way that represents your mental map. How many beginner-Ali-pretenders come in jumping, trying to shuffle around, only to realise it does not work... a good flogging normally cures that. Truth is every fighter is a mixture of styles. That being said, people say I look like a southpaw cotto, which I had no intention of becoming.
People say that I that I have a style close to Vitali Klitschko. But that's probly only because I'm 6'6
my style is maybe too ordinary, i dont have it, i am boxing how my trainer taught me, but i am watching many matches and sometimes i realise that i copied some move or something not on purpose which is great. models: tyson (off/def), barrera (all ), ali (footwork), floyd jr., whitaker, frazier, calzaghe etc...
That's bull****. Dempsey was fighting with a Pacquaio style long before anybody ever even dreamed of Pacquaio. Patterson fought like Tyson before Tyson was born. And there have been plenty of guys throughout history that have fought in a similar style to Mayweather.
so tell me do they fight exactly the same? no, they have differences in them, Its like saying ever pressure fighter fights the same because there pressure fighters. Everyones different in different ways and the same in other ways
You obviously want to model fighters who are technically sound and who rely more on skill/technique to win rather than brute strength or raw physical talent. This means that I'd be more inclined to study someone like Glen Johnson rather than RJJ. Some of the fighters from the past and present who meet the above criteria: Past: Conn Moore Buchanan Present: Lara Kotelnik Chambers
