Generally the younger a boxer is the more mobile he is, but who are some boxers whose mobility increased as they got older? Couple examples: Mike McCallum: Moved around a lot more at after jumping to 160. I think it was a combination of facing bigger, stronger guys forcing him to make that change, and the loss to Kalambay embarrassing him into being a little less flat-footed. He was on his toes more against Toney the first time, Kalambay the second time, and Watson than in any of his fights at 154, with the exception of his title defense against Minchillo. Shoji Oguma: In Oguma's first few fights on film (through the Lopez fight) he's hardly a fully formed fighter, more just a big, oafish fly who had a solid enough jab. As he tried to get back to the top, he added a strong body attack and really improved his footwork. Did a much better job moving in and out in the late '70s, and in his first fight with Park he clearly frustrated the champion with his elusiveness, which mostly stemmed from the waist down. After that his physical strength began to wane, and against Avelar he looked almost like a pure stick-and-mover. Any examples you guys can think of?
Jersey Joe Walcott,in his 20s he was your average journeyman, but in his 30s he's a real smooth operator...
BHOP for sure. I would say he was never a dancer but he became a way more mobile fighter as his career went on especially at 175. His early title reign at 160, he was a very physical guy that bullied opponents on the inside with his physicality but against Tito he proved he was way more versatile than that and became more of ring generalist that could box on the outside when he situation called for it.
Kid Gavilan was more of an aggressive, swarming-type fighter when he 1st arrived on the scene ... This content is protected ... but later made increasingly better use of his footwork & long range fighting capabilities as his career progressed: This content is protected This content is protected
