The Bill Medei post prompted me to make this one. This list will probably end up being longer than I expect and include more names than one would hope, but boxing is, after all, a violent sport that can attract violent men. If you post someone, try to give us a thumbnail of their case. Bill Medei: Killed his wife and her child, stabbing them a total of 81 times and, get this, claimed self-defense. Yathomas Riley: Riley was locked up for two years on charges he shot his girlfriend in the head (twice) but the prosecution dropped the case when evidence corroborating that it was a suicide attempt surfaced. Then he murdered his new gf (or maybe it was wife) in front of her son. Carlos Monzon: Strangled his lover during an argument, rendering her unconscious, then dragged her to the balcony and threw her over it, killing her. Lovely man was Carlos. James Scott: Rahway prison boxing star was incarcerated for armed robbery, with a murder charge resulting in a hung jury. He beat Eddie Mustafa Muhammad (Gregory at the time) and Yaqui Lopez, among others, fighting behind bars. After he lost to Jerry Martin, Scott was retried for the murder and convicted, fighting just twice more (losing to Dwight Muhammad Qawi and winning another fight) before retiring. Exum Speight: Pleaded no contest to murder of his manager in 1987 after DNA testing revived the cold case that had been unsolved for 26 years before Speight was charged. Tim “Doc” Anderson: Shot promoter Rick “Elvis” Parker to death. Anderson believed Parker was responsible for having him drugged before a rematch with former NFL star Mark Gastineau, whom Anderson had previously beaten.
Esteban Dejesus: murdered a teenager, apparently in a road rage incident. Jo-El Scott: doing life for **** and murder. One of the worst human beings to ever box. James Butler: murdered Max Kellerman’s brother Sam https://vault.si.com/vault/2006/04/17/blood-relations Jack Blackburn: did time for manslaughter
Rubin Carter got accused of doing so, it's well known that the accusations were false, but some tried to argue about it.
Bill Papke shot and murdered his ex wife and then shot himself (3 times in the chest) in an act of suicide. https://cdnc.ucr.edu/?a=d&d=SPNP19361127.2.88&e=-------en--20--1--txt-txIN--------
Not a boxer, but actor Michael Jace — known primarily for a regular cast role on The Shield — portrayed Mitch “Blood” Green in the Tyson movie by HBO and contender Marvin Shabazz in The Great White Hype. He murdered his girlfriend with a handgun and called 911, confessing to the crime. AFAIK, he had no boxing background but was just an athletic actor with the right build to portray boxers (I think he also played Michael Jordan in some flick). His wife was an avid runner. He shot her in the legs first and said, ‘You like running, run to heaven.’
Canadian middleweight Del Fontaine had relocated to England where he ended up killing his girlfriend and attempting to kill her mother. The British courts had him hanged Kid McCoy appeared to have had a life of mental issues. He killed his live-in girlfriend when she attempted to reconcile with her husband and then went looking for him, wounding several in the process. He was released from prison after 8 years and later committed suicide.
Don King gets an honorable mention for stomping a dude to death in the street. Same with Bat Masterson who acted as timekeeper in several important bouts and as Charlie Mitchell's second against Corbett. Bat claimed to have only killed 3 men but that seems like an undercount.
Jeff Sims served time for manslaughter before his pro career. His life, unfortunately, ended in the same manner.
Dishonorable mention to the Black Rhino, Clifford Etienne, who tried to shoot a cop but his gun jammed.
1st name to pop in my head. Didn't know him personally, but he and I were born in the same county, and trained at some of the same local gyms. Per reliable sources He had more than one body on his ledger, and was one of the most disliked humans I've heard of. Never heard anything positive about the man from people that knew him. Simms was an all around bad guy. He tempted the rules of chance one time to many, and finally received the justice he deserved. Very few mourned his passing.
