In the old days the trainers did a lot of floor work. By that I mean that they were over your shoulder as you shadow boxed and hit the bags. You don't see that much any more as most coaches confine themselves to pad work. Which, incidentally, is where most fighters learn bad habits.

Pads are a good alternative if you have just about nothing else, and nobody wants to spar. I think it can be a decent support exercise alongside shadowboxing to start up a boxer's instincts, as long as you use it correctly. It's also good to get that feeling of hitting something in, many people can't afford a real bag and don't have anything to hit, so it's a decent way to get your punch in and really feel your form, strength, and motion come full circle.

A lot of trainers use them because it makes them the show; they are "great on mitts." Look up some girl that calls herself Mitt Queen- she is part of the Ryan Garcia circus. But you see a lot of the same. And the fact of it is, to throw those extended patty cake routines, you stand in one place with your chin high because you are watching the mitts.
You can effectively use mitts if you are able to move. The 300 pound guy at Floyd's gym can't move much and cameras like it better if you just stand there. Personally, I use mitts like sparring in that we move a lot and I don't walk around with my hands there to be hit- I use the presentation of the target as a tool to teach distance and range.

Pretty sure Cus had him doing barbell shrugs, there's also Atlas and Rooney's shenanigans of betting on 12-14 year old Tyson beating grown men/other fighters on bench press

Tyson was 100% stronger than Marciano, had a better right especially post prison than Marciano, and would ktfo Marciano, Marciano was a hell of an 180lber but that doesn't mean he was an end all be all
