Didn't we have this one a couple of weeks ago ? At the time I cited Dave Charnley, Terry Downes , Jim Watt and Tony Sibson. Dave ' Boy ' Green is another with a happy story. After retirement Dave started a storage and warehousing company in Cambridgeshire. The business has gone from strength to strength over the years and made Dave more than a millionaire. The old ' Fen Tiger ' spends most of his time these days raising fortunes for charities across Cambridgeshire and remains a beloved son in his native area. Ex British Middleweight Champ Johnny Prichett made a fortune in property in Spain and the UK. His Champions Golf Day was the hottest ticket for any golfing ex Boxer for years. Jack Bodell worked hard after retirement and built up a business portfolio of 2 butchers shops and 6 fish and chip shops dotted across South Derbyshire and Warwickshire. He also bought a plot of land just outside his hometown of Swadlincote. Jack sat on this plot for years and then when the mining industry collapsed and local and national Government were trying to attract logistics companies to the area, Jack sold his nest egg over £1.5m.
Yeah, I read that before. That was in his later years. Life happens and it's rarely perfect. Gene lived to be 81. He did ok in my view.
Oh, in case I forget to mention, and it should be acknowledged, Gene Tunney also had a son, John, who became a US senator, so he did alright for himself in that field. Yes, Gene kept his money and lived to be 81, a good age all in all. He did ok, imo.
What? I don't know. Was he? I never heard him being described as an alcoholic. It seems he may have turned to drink later on at the end of his life. Was he an alcoholic? I don't know. I'm not giving anyone labels like that. He lived to be 81 so a pretty good age.
Oh, I don't know too much about it. Other people mentioned it. Any drink problem he had seems to have occuured later on in his life.
He's bitter about certain things like Foreman not fighting him or not getting the respect his deserves. But for the most part he seems happy.
Larry's biggest concern always seemed to be about remaining financially secure and in that regard I think at 70 years old, he is very content with his life. On the few occasions we get to see him on TV or boxing functions, he seems very relaxed and happy to talk candidly about his past boxing career.
My hero you mean. The modern day dragon slayer & champion of champions against whose scythe of a left hook no man can stand? Far be it for me to speak of the great one. I am unworthy.
