Just finished watching Tim Witherspoon lose to Andrew Golota at age 40 here: This content is protected Which made me think: Which boxers found at least, moderate success from their 40s on? Off the top of my head, the obvious answers: George Foreman Larry Holmes Bernard Hopkins Roberto Duran Archie Moore Manny Pacquiao But then the list gets thinner... Joe Bugner had moderate success Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. actually went 3-1 after hitting 40 Evander Holyfield Who else..Max Schmeling? (I think he won 3 out of 5 after hitting the big four-O?)
It's not a 'proper' example but up to the first Ali fight Sonny Liston was widely considered to be unbeatable, and had been very recently putting in some excellent performances, although his official age was 'only' 32, it's fairly widely accepted that he was at least in his mid 30s and could fairly easily have been 40 plus. See also Ortiz, Luis. Sugar Ray Robinson had some good wins against named opponents in his 40s.
Wladimir actually didn't win any fights in his 40s. He had a good fight vs Joshua, but that was the only fight in his 40s.
I was watching that fight, Valuev was always a bad fighter, with his height and weight he managed to lose to the old Holyfield, whom the judges stole and gave the victory to Valuev...
41-43 Tony Thompson: beat Price x2 and Solis x2, every time as the underdog 40 Povetkin: drew with Hunter and beat Whyte, both as the underdog 42-43 Browne: beat Opelu and Fa, both as the underdog 40-41 Vitali: beat Adamek, Chisora and Charr 41 G. Jones: beat Lebedev as the underdog 42 Takam: beat Yoka as the underdog 42 Ortiz: beat Martin
Witherspoon himself had few good wins and highlight reel KOs agaisnt 4 fringe contenders in his mid 40s
Which brother? Wlad lost his only fight he fought over 40 to AJ and his previous fight where he was nearly 40 lost to Fury.
Ray Robinson had 30 wins after the age of 40 and Thulani Malinga twice won the Super Middleweight world title, beating Nigel Benn and Robin Reid, respectively.
Archie Moore defended the LHW championship numeral times in his 40s. Virgil Hill won the WBA cruiserweight belt at 42, mixed with competitive losses to Jean Marc Mormeck, Henry Maske and Firat Arslan. Antonio Tarver had minor success at 40, scoring draws with Steve Cunningham and Lateef Kayode, while also beating the likes of: Danny Green, Nagy Aguilera and Johnathon Banks.
I’m amazed to see no one has mentioned Jeff Fenech’s domination of Azumah Nelson when he was easily into his 50’s. Jeff’s body looked amazing - better than most 20 year olds!
