O’Dell Leonard was reported to be a cousin of Ray, but that has been disputed by a lot of people. He was a longtime sparring pattern of SRL and got a bit of notoriety as part of the team and his claim of being a relative.

Janks Morton, who worked with O’Dell, said he wasn’t a blood relation and that his last name in the amateurs was Davis but he changed it to try to cash in on a SRL connection.

Young Dick Tiger fought around LA and currently has a gym there.
By the way, the Felt Forum is/was in NYC, and is not the same building as the Great Western Forum in Inglewood, California.

'Course this would be done by his parents, but... Tyson Fury.

Cornelius Boza added "Edwards" to his name to honor his trainer, if I recall correctly. Not after a fighter, but...

There were the two Rodolfo Gonzalezes who combined to go 122-19-3 both nicknamed El Gato. I assume those were their real names but also that the second one adopted the first one’s nickname as a tribute.

Or maybe they were just cat people.

Sugar Ray Leonard taking "Sugar Ray" to honor previous Olympian Sugar Ray Seales.

Not named after a boxer, but Hector "Macho" Camacho so loved the Village People he used the "Macho Man" name. He even trained at the local YMCA and considered, at one point, joining the Navy.

Finally, former heavyweight champion Max Baer took his ring name not from a former boxer, but from the actor who played Jethro on the Beverly Hillbillies.

Betcha didn't know any of this.

This is my favorite post on this forum in years.

Max Baer wanted to be a Double-Naught spy.

    Some obscure ones:

Young Ali (some guy Barry McGuigan beat)
George Foreman (one of the crowd of ridiculously named 1980s Zimbabwean fighters)
