That put them ahead of others that they might not rank ahead of in all areas. Ah, for example. Hearn's is an ATG, but his position among the Fab Four is debatable to some extent. BUT in H2H matches he's an absolute monster, a combination of height, power, speed, and pure boxing that gets him a majority over the massive majority of fighters out there. Lennox Lewis also comes to mind. A HW ATG, again, but his power coupled with the reach, size, and modicum of skill that a lot of big guys lack... He's a monster.
Are you asking for guys who rate higher head to head in their prime than they do on career greatness?
I'd say a guy like Riddick Bowe, and i'm no fan, could do some damage. Put him with Johnson, Dempsey, Louis, Marciano, Liston, Frazier - i can't see him losing ALL the fights. He'll do some damage somewhere. Tyson maybe but he's rated quite highly by most so Bowe is a sort of better example. Eddie Mustafa/Dwight Braxton/Qawi - in top form these two have the potential to wreak havoc. Thomas Hearns - already mentioned and the potential to beat many greats from 147 to 175. He is highly ranked tho. Alexis Arguello - i actually think he could take out the odd higher ranked 135. He didn't have many fights here and is ranked not so high. Jeff Fenech - i have no doubt at all Fenech could overwhelm plenty of top fighters thru 3 or 4 divisions. Never stayed in one division long enough to rank top shelf in that single division. Azumah Nelson - seems a bit unfashionable but would be live vs any Featherweight in history. Aaron Pryor - i consider him overrated in many ways but he was a natural lightweight who moved up for his shot. IF he can make 135 around the first Arguello fight he might beat a top 135 or two. Many claim he was a natural 135.
A great mention. McGrain will prolly remind of of Charlie Burley too, and along those lines i may as well mention Marcel Cerdan.
Hearns is also capable of being beaten by many fighters you'd expect him to beat though. A big, strong banger with a sturdy chin is a problem for Hearns.
Fair call, certainly up in the weights. Aside from Barkley Hearns only ever lost to ATG's and beat a few too. He also whupped a couple just below ATG status. Your prototype is his nemesis tho, particularly at 160 and above. They'd want to be pretty good tho, and i'm not sure i'd agree with "many", certainly not many we'd expect him to beat. Guaranteed every fight would be edge of you seat stuff tho lol
Below 160 you are correct, he was capable of beating most, but up to 175, I'd take quite a few. At 154 the only fighter I'd take to beat him would be Mike McCallum.
