If someone has never been to or lived in Ireland they should only refer to themselves as Irish if they are of pure Irish blood(both parents are Irish) , other wise they are as Irish as those ornamental Irish cottages(which are actually made in China/Taiwan) .

Only in America , in the rest of the World , I'm Irish=nationality .
How come no American would ever respond with 'I'm British' to you're 'what are you question' even if they were of British decent ?

So what makes them Irish? One Irish parent? 2 Irish Grandparents? I'd guess most so-called 'Irish-Americans' don't even have that?

What about the other nationalities in their gene pool, or do they just pick the one that suits them?

More likely that 'Irish' is seen as being 'cool' in Boston/ NY?

But think about it , only a select ethnic origins are given by people , Mexican , Porto Rican , Irish but never German , Australian , Portugeuse .

Some people are proud of their ethnic routs , nothing wrong with that .
However someone who has never been to Ireland and does not have two irish parents does not deserve the right to call themselves Irish . They have the right to call themselves of Irish descent(if they have that) or call themselves American(presuming they're American) and that's it .
