Since absolute discipline, focus and will to win matter so much in boxing, that some fighters become monsters for the one night is none too surprising. Maintaining all that, fight in and fight out, is the true measure of a great fighter. Fighters with obvious skills in complement can post that one performance that, in its own right, can stand them up quite well in terms of H2H though a one fight against one opponent sampling is obviously somewhat insufficient given a broader range of skills to contend with in various H2H matches. Douglas skills were never in question - it was those other intangibles that he often didn’t bring into the ring with him. The “usual” Buster might not have had it in him arise from that 8th round KD. Obviously, Buster didn’t need to be knocked down like that but ironically, it was kinda of the cherry on top when Douglas arose to put a huge exclamation mark on the fact that he came to win, no other outcome being entertained.
I am skeptical to mention this is might just be Bummy Davis' thread .. I mean , I got so much respect for the converted south paw with a MASSIVE left hook .. who fought Zivic and all in some brawls .. Taking on an Italian last name to get fights .... But to KO Montgomery for the first time in Bob's 66 first fights .. None less in the first round with left hooks is a huge accomplishment .. he was a 4 to 1 dog
Terry Krueger took a hiding from world rated Pedro Lovell for three rounds and didn't blink and then knocked him out cold for five minutes back in 1973. Even got talked about as a George Foreman defense. Never looked like a contender again.
Wilbert Johnson was a real, live — scratch that, make it ‘undead’ — monster for his entire career. This content is protected
Especially not after the rematch with Lovell. Saw both fights, btw. Boxing from the Olympic. What a show.
