After Haye's comments on Hardtalk, regarding not allowing a future son to become a pro boxer if he wasn't at least as fast as Haye (because 'He would get hit too often'), it got me thinking about boxers who were slow but had an elite defense.

    Can you name any?

    Clottey, Winky, Narvaez

Toney and Hopkins had decent speed, but were not proper fast either.

    MW Eubank.

Byrd wasn't that fast and probably had one of the best defenses ever, very underrated imo.

Foreman had some relatively good defense, for a lumbering heavyweight i mean

Slow is an overstatement, but Mike McCallum had modest hand speed, and wasn't too quick on his feet.

He had a very good defense though.

    James Toney. All timing.

Clottey and Wright didn't impress with speed either.

Someone else mentioned Foreman. Surprisingly effective D.

What type of speed? Handspeed? Footspeed? Head-movement?

David Tua had a good tight defence, but depended mostly on timing and aggression

Agree with Winky, Naravez, and Hopkins Although Hopkins as you said, had decent hand speed. Don't agree with Clottey, Toney, and Eubank. The very young Toney had very good hand speed. He was no Roy Jones or Michael Nunn of course but he could throw 6 punch combos like it was nothin. Eubank had good hand speed too. Sometimes he appeared slow, because he was timing and preying on his opponent. Clotte even had pretty good hand speed, not slow.

    Co-sign; the man had rhythm:boogie

Of course, can't talk about rhythm and timing without mentioning Locche.

But if you want to talk slow - slow, Foreman had those fuggin' Frankenstein-monster lumbering mitts that could just bat away punches.
