the fact toney is still a defensive beast and with his counters shows u he has great timing, speed is overrated.
If I'm understanding the question correctly then Winky can't be topped as a modern day example, but I'd have McCallum in there too.
Chavez certainly beat up on alot of fighters that were quicker, faster, and some even stronger than he was. When you can do that, thats a real sign of your boxing skill level. I'm going to get bashed for this, but I've often wondered how Pernell Whitaker would have faired against a fighter quicker and faster than he was. He fought one in Hurtado when he was heading down hill, and got thorougly embarrassed. Pernell could'nt cut the ring off and was having trouble getting his shots off. Pernell dug deep and caught Hurtado with a huge shot and stopped him very late in the fight. Suprising that up to that point Pernell had lost nearly every round in embarrasing fashion. How Whitaker would have faired against faster fighters than he was is a big question mark in my mind. He never fought two of his peers, Meldrick Taylor and Hector Camacho who JC Chavez did face. Yeah, I know he faced DLH, but I had him losing 8 or the 12 rounds, winning only 3 as he was strictly defensive and not applying anything on his shots. Technically he did nothing in the fight, he just slipped and dodged and threw the occasional potshot toward DLH. Pernell always threw alot of arm punches that never impressed me against his stiffer opposition.
Marciano had an effective crouch with some bobbing and weaving and made himself a small target Archie Moore had good D
