James Toney - Roy Jones Tito - Hopkins Vargas - Tito Rafael Ruelas - ODLH ODLH - Mosley/(Maybe Mayweather) Corrales/Gatti - Mayweather Juan Diaz - Marquez Hearns - Hagler
You think DLH came up against the best version of Mayweather, a Mayweather who looked unbeatable that night? I completely disagree. That version looked the most beatable since Castillo gave Mayweather a great deal of trouble.
The only reason I picked Mayweather, was because Oscar picked the weight, the gloves, the ring size and everything else; and Mayweather still came out on top, it was something of a stacked deck. I agree that's the closest Mayweather came to defeat since Castillo (I had it to FMJ by 8 to 4)
I see what you are saying, but the thread is mainly for boxers who were not going to lose that night. They performed at peak, or as close to their peak as possible. Doesn't matter who they were in with that night, it would have taken something special to beat them. Mayweather against DLH looked lethargic, slow, not as accurate as he usually is...and he was made to look quite bad at times with DLH pinning him against the ropes unleashing combinations on him, effective or not.
Fernando Vargas running into Tito Trinidad at his peak, yet he still gave a good account of himself, I honestly believed the fight ruined him
Sorry to snipe, but seriously??- because he had loaded gloves you mean? Terrible example. Douglas vs. Tyson Lamotta vs. Robinson 1 Hagler vs Hearns Johansson vs Patterson 1
Well the wraps, illegal or not, had no affect on his chin. Margarito showed great mental strength to continue fighting on after the amount of clean, hard shots he took. I don't like Margarito, and I believe there is a chance he knew about the wraps, but Cotto was not beating him that night.
Slightly similar scenarios. Douglas pulling off an extraordinary win over Tyson that would put his name down in history, then running into a near enough peak Holyfield and getting knocked out in 3 rounds. Similarly Danny Williams putting on his career best performance overcoming (admittedly far past best) Tyson, then stepping in with a prime Vitali and getting pummelled, KD'd multiple times and stopped Frazier certainly had the misfortune of sharing a ring with prime Foreman...
Agreed. On that night, in the latter stages, it was all about stamina and fortitude. Something that Margo had over Cotto.
I hate it when people mention that the loaded wraps (if he used them) had no effect on the outcome of the Cotto fight as they did not help his chin. Don't you think that by having loaded wraps the damage done to Cotto came sooner and was much more severe? If this damage was not there Cotto would have been able to stand and punch harder and last much longer. Look at the last fight even though the patterns were simular at the same stages of the fight Cotto took way less damage. IF Margo loaded his gloves for the first Cotto fight (which i believe he did) it most definitely had a huge effect on the outcome.
