    Exactly.
The guy would routinely try to gouges eyes out in a boxing match. I think he used to joke when anyone mentioned they'd seen Lou Nova "Oh, yeah, how's his eye ?" ... or it could have been another opponent.
He did this routinely. Not just occassionally or in moments of 'lost control' (as Tyson might).
This was his version of a sporting contest.

So God knows what he would do in a street fight.
Or a bar fight .... on his home turf ... in his bar.

Apparently he had a pet bear at his bar that he keep chained up and would beat up as a training gimmick. He also boxed a kangaroo and wrestling an octopus.
... In the days when animal rights/welfare/protection hadn't quite caught on.

Tyson either ran or walked to his jeep and drove away while Mitch Green tore the wing mirror off.

    Tyson said "I was scared".

Either way, it's a very overrated incident.
Green was an idiot and we all know Tyson was no saint.

Yeah, I'm kind of green on pre-Jack Johnson boxing. I'm waiting on a John L book to come through so hopefully I can learn a bit more.

Other way around. Walker and Greb had spent the whole night drinking and joking after their fight, but when it was drawing to a close and Greb was climbing into a cab, Walker said 'If you hadn't have thumbed me in the eye I'd have beaten you, ya Dutch rat' Greb immediately went to pull off his coat to fight and while doing so Mickey chinned up. They were immediately broken up by bouncers and went their seperate ways.

    :good

I'm no expert on the John L Sullivan era myself.
Charley Mitchell, Jake Kilrain, Peter Jackson .... I've heard of them guys but I haven't read a great deal about them.

Your right about the twins. I read about them having some fall outs with these three Irish brothers who were all ex-heavyweight amateurs. The twins were only lightweights and still young at the time and they met these 3 massive irish fellas in a bar and words were exchanged and within a few minutes two of the irish guys were knocked out and ronnie had to be pulled off the third by three men to stop him from kiling him. another reason why i think size means nothing in a street fight

Cool read anyone else got tales of boxers in street fights like this?

Most of you probably already know about Hagler getting bottled by Wigfall and rolling under a car.

Tony Galento laid a cop out with a single punch years after he retired, a right hook, when asked about it Galento smiled and said "Only suckas lead wid der right". He also KO'd Jackie Gleason after heckling his stand up Gleason told him to go outside where Galento knocked him out cold with a single punch.

Jack Dempsey knocked out two muggers in 1970. He beat them so bad they refused to get up until someone called the police. They figured a well dressed old man was an easy target - too bad it was Dempsey.

Sonny Liston got into a funny one with a copper. Some cop "racially abused" Liston so Sonny knocked him out, stole him gun and put him upside down in a dumpster.

I think Billy Conn attacker a robber who was sticking up a shop he was buying from, this was when he was an old guy, inhis 60's I think.

Never heard that before. Is that story about Duran true? did it happen in his earlier days on in panama or in the US? would have thought it would be big news if it was when he became well known?

No. This supposed incident is a myth. Never happened.

When he was young. I think he was around 16/17, coming home half-drunk from a dancehall with a girl he pulled. 5 guys, more drunk than him, tried messing with the girl and he gave them a sound ass-whuping.

It was thought of as a myth for years until Duran's hospital record showed he was treated for a broken finger after being involved in a brawl with five other men.

If that was what a young, drunk Duran could have done to 5 dudes. Imagine what an older, tougher Duran could have done 1 vs 1 with someone. I doubt many could beat Duran in a street fight - including many heavyweights.

Really!? Tell me more. Marciano always came across as a quiet, meek kind of guy - then again those are normally the real ones to be fearful of. The kind who don't have anything to prove.

Didnt Duran himself claim that he broke his finger from knocking down a horse? still, thats a cool story. it does sound like something Duran would do.

theres one of him also where he was attacked and he beat the guy up and carved his name in the guys face with a knife in case he wanted to get him later. dunno if its true but it shows what Duran was...
