I am fairly certain Joe Louis defended his title against a fighter who was legally blind. I would like to think that modern athletic commissions would not allow a fighter to compete if his visual accuity was low enough. Something akin to the minimum requirements for operating a motor vehicle.

Some commissions probably let a person fight if they can sufficiently fog a mirror.

My teacher is a M.D. eye doctor, and he said this. He also said that Prorefractive keroectomy would be the only way to go for a combat sport. The only thing is that it takes a long time for recovery.

    PRK for short.

Sam Langford!! top 5 ATG and dude was legally blind by the end of his career. And ended up a blind poor old man in a tiny room in NY. Sad story.

    Vito Antuofermo had bad eyes,

    Iran the Blade Barkley

Sugar ray Leonard retired the first time because of bad eyes (detatched retina i think???)

Harry Greb I'm pretty sure was totally blind in one eye and is a legit top 10 ATG

This must be the very first thread on this topic on ESB and its a legitimate question too. It's a rarity to log into this site and not feel a nauseating sense of deja vu. More topics like this please.

IIRC, Clay/Ali in Liston I, when blinded by the Liston liniment treatment told Dundee he was seeing 3 of Liston.

Dundee told him to hit the one in the middle.

    Words to live by.

Adding to the ones mentioned, Tiger Flowers died in the same way Greb did, trying to get eye surgery to remove scar tissue, as I understand. Both the same age, I think.

In his auto he says he went into the Foreman rematch after surgery and took cataracts into the ****ing bout! :patsch
Edit:  Yeah, I'm pretty worn out. That was supposed to say "contacts" not "cataracts". He said he took contacts into the bout.

 When you slum it on the general, Greb's not coming up too often, Russ. It took to the second page to get to Langford. :-(

At least one. John Henry Lewis (ATG Light Heavyweight, HOFer) and it was the only time in over 100 pro fights he was stopped.

    Me either! :scaredas:
