Boxers that were smart with there dough and made money from other business interests: Oscar De La Hoya tops this list (though he was stupid in his younger days) Naseem Hamed used his brothers brains well Ray leonard Johnny Pritchard (british middleweight champ in 60's)
Oh I forgot, Max Schemeilling He made an absolute fortune from the first coca cola franchise in germany
Dempsey was wiped out in the 1929 Crash, and rebounded on the strength of his name and reputation without having to make a return to competition. 1934 was not a great year in which to start a new business, yet his restaurant went on to become a NYC landmark. Tunney was not even affected by that 1929 Crash, making his financial position even stronger than it was prior to the event. His son became a US Senator. Holmes owns Easton, PA. Becoming Mayor would actually be a demotion for him. (Larry could probably be coronated King of that fiefdom.) Marvin Hagler moved to Italy, learned the language, and became an action movie star in his adopted homeland. (He speaks English with an Italian accent today, quite an achievement for a man who pronounced Vito's name as, "Antuofermio.") Jimmy McLarnin was known for his business savvy, and Billy Soose put his college background to good use, operating a popular lakeside resort in the Poconos from 1946 to 1990.
Not so sure how business savvy Eubank was Yes he was very good at creating the bad guy image and using the fact that everybody wanted to see him lose made him millions but i dont know how was he was with that money. Im sure thats he was in a bit of financial trouble during the Collins bouts and might have been the reason he fought on after. He has always been okay though because he gets the endorsements and has the name to pull him through but maybe not the smartest with his money but he was good at drumming up the demand for himself as a brand.
In the interest of confidentiality, my sister won't discuss what enterprises he was involved in prior to the end of his career, but she worked for a law firm which represented Marv in the 1980s during his title reign, and will only say he demonstrated some good acumen even then, probably an off-shoot of the same discipline and focus he brought to his training regimen. Nor am I privy to what he's done in Italy besides acting.
Believable thread. I really reckon what youve said is true. he seems like the type who would really appreciate the value of a dollar. there was nothing flash about him he never made a comeback to boxing so he must have been wise with his money.
The Foreman Grill didn't take an ounce of business sense, he simply accepted an endorsement offer, bitter Larry Holmes refuses to buy such a grill and prefers to fry his meats saying 'just pour the fat to the side if you dont want it on the meat' Holmes invested his money wisely, The Hatton family marketed Ricky perfectly and fleeced the British public dry - truely great marketing of a not so great commodity, The Klitschko's promotional team is very very successful and this isn't solely based on their ability but in truth it helps allot and they could be Don King puppets right now if they didn't know better, DLH is in a successful business but it would be a stretch to say he has much of a brain, Hamed's family made 100million (150million US) from various promotions although I'd guess the majority of the brains were his brothers
oh yes and he really milked (saw the commercial potential) of his comeback George talks a lot of ****, thats why he doesnt get distinguised as someone with business accumen
