I'm a big fan of Meldrick Taylor's footwork and I often find myself watching his feet for entire fights. I just wanted to know if there are any fighters whose footwork you greatly admire (must be able to find videos for their fights on youtube)?
marvin hagler. you see him leaping with hooks, countering and getting out of range, circling around his opponents, and fighting off the back foot. dude was a mastermind. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TZHIo5ylQA8[/ame]
Hopkins doesn't have fast feet but he's got good footwork which allows him to hang with more talented fighters in that department.
Some good examples here so far. Remember, footwork doesn't always look like Muhammad Ali up on the toes dancing around. That burns quite a lot of energy and doesn't give the opportunity to deliver really hard shots. Subtle footwork is demonstrated by the likes of Pernell Whitaker, Ray Robinson, Mike Tyson, Ray Leonard, Roberto Duran and Manny Pacquiao. Offense AND defense using angles. A simple step or slide to the outside of a punch opening your opportunities for counters. Not being a stationary target in front of your opponent to be counter punched. It is beautiful to watch and extremely effective in the ring.
Mike McCallum is good to watch for any aspect of boxing. A guy like Salvador Sanchez comes to mind as well.
Muhammad Ali had poor footwork. I think Gamboa does too. Being fast, quick, agile, nimble etc is not good footwork. They can do great things with their feet because of footwork but technique, balance, going forward and backwards, alternating directions etc is what it is about.
I took it more face value, Great to watch and great to learn from are 2 differant things. Hopkins is one of the best if you want to see great balance and distance but not that fun to watch. But Gamboa doesn't have bad footwork at all, he might get hit but thats to do with his overall strategy.
