Past and present which fighters either retired with unfinished business or still have unfinished business with another fighter?
Khan - Garcia Khan - Peterson Khan - Prescot Bit of a trend there. Krystal Khan will call out everyone and his dog but not make an effort to avenge losses
Marvin Hagler vs Ray Leonard. Hagler tried for almost 2 years after the loss to get another fight but Ray turned it down. Once Hagler finally announced his retirement, Leonard agreed to a rematch but it was Hagler this time that turned it down.
I used to agree with this sentiment but have changed my view as time has passed on. I was never a big of Lewis when he was active- he never really connected with me and American fans in general. He came across as aloof, lacking charisma and a little too cerebral. Not to mention he was stopped twice by inferior men twice, so when he got the stoppage over vitali while he was down on the cards and then retired instead of giving him a rematch it confirmed my dislike of him. But as I look back, Lewis is an all time great and didn’t owe Vitaly a damn thing. IIRC, Lennox was supposed to fight Kirk Johnson, who got injured, and Vitaly stepped in. Lewis didn’t appear to be in great shape but still went to war and appeared to be turning the fight around when it was stopped. Lennox, who was considered chinny, withstood Vitaly’s bombs and fired back with his own. Vitaly had his chance to catch an older, underprepared champ and couldn’t close the deal - that’s not LL’s fault. I think that if Lennox had rematched him and lost it would’ve affected his legacy but if he had won people wouldn’t give him much credit for beating a big, robotic Eastern European who had already tested positive for steroids before and a guy he had previously stopped.
Good perspective. Irt the OP though.... The two best HWs went to war, had a FOTC, that sadly had an inconclusive ending. And while the official ruling is TKO, evidence of a butt started the first, and worst of the cuts. Lewis, being an incredibly intelligent fighter, took full advantage of it, and targeted it, while Vitali threw caution to the wind trying to pull it off before it could be stopped. Lewis didn't owe anyone, anything. He's the GOAT. Retiring doesn't change that. But...a more prepared Lewis, even if he lost, would still be the GOAT....just 40+ mil richer lolol. Imo...his chin was only dented when he let it hang out there. As for the 5/6 lbs.. maybe it was to aid him with Johnson size.... Maybe he just felt he was comfortable with it.
Vitali improved Lewis resume more than Kirk Johnson ever could so Lewis owe'd him that much considering he went on to dominate the division.
