I once had dinner in a restaurant & Nigel Benn was on the table next 2 us. An absolute gentleman. I saw Ernie Shavers when he was doing a public speaking tour, he was excellent & a really nice guy. I see Tony Sibson in my bar several times a year, he's a really nice bloke but you wouldnt want to **** him off.
Met a fair few at shows; David Haye Frankie Gavin Richie Woodhall Matthew Hatton Bernard Hopkins Shane Mosely Oscar De La Hoya All nice enough, stopping for autographs and/or pics. Except for B-Hop who snarled at us and walked off. Scariest man I've met in real life. Met Enzo a few times at various shows, always a nice bloke and dead happy to actually stop and chat rather than just sign something and get off. Met Tyson (well, only got to shake his hand but good enough for me), Tim Witherspoon and John H Stracey at a Tyson dinner show. Shea Neary was a trainer at the gyn I went to for a while and ref'd a white collar show I was on. Met Earnie Shavers a few times when he was doing the doors in Liverpool. Met Paul Smith in town a few days after he beat Quigley. Wished him all the best and he looked genuinely pleased and was a nice fella. He gets a bad press sometimes, but he was sound enough with me on the one occassion I met him. Met Quigley a few times. Sparred with Geard Ajetovic. Met Kenny Anderson when he was sparring my cousin Mick Stanton. Went to junior school with David Price and still see him now and again round and about. He's sound too, not sure how he comes across to the outsider because I've known him since we were kids (not best mates or anything, but let on to each other if we see each other), but he's not some miserable get as has been made out. Just dead sound. Few others too that probably arent as high profile.
Well I met Clinton Woods in a car park in Derbyshire after we got our cars muddled up, just before he went out to the States to defend the IBF belt. Lovely bloke, had a long chat, and he gave my son a tee shirt. Not quite up to the standard of previous posters, but I thought I would throw it in, I'm a simple soul at heart.
ken buchanan ricky hatton crawford ashley terry spinks all top blokes i've sparred with one two lads who have won aba's, commonwealth and olympic medals all good lads. give me a boxer over a footballer any time
When I was ringside for the Froch v Pascal fight, I had the pleasure of chatting to Jon Thaxton. Proper boxing man, happy to give up some of his time. I met David Haye, Adam Booth and Wladimir Klitschko at the Fight for Peace event at the Excel a few years ago. All three of those men were gentlemen, again happy to give up their time. Barry McGuigan was at the same event, and sadly he was less than willing to talk. Miserable ****. Finally, met James DeGale at the Mayweather workout a couple of years ago - did a report for here too if I can be bothered to dig it up. DeGale was happy to talk, we spent about 15-20mins just shooting the ****, chatting boxing, he was very friendly.
David haye 4 times once it was in bluewater shopping mall when he was just a prospect, never actually went and spoke to him but saw him. another time in stratford shortly after the first time, i spoke to him for a while and he told me him and some of the guys he was with are going over for a drink and asked if i'd like to join him. Another time in lakeside shopping mall, it was before the mormeck fight i think, saw him and spoke to him for a while, most people didn't recognize him so he got really chuffed when i shouted hey david. The last time i saw him was last year outside of repton boxing club, he was standing alone outside i think waiting for someone so i went and spoke to him.
Good Thread!:good I've met Joe Calzaghe countless times, he lives about about a mile away from me so he's always knocking about. He parked next to me in ASDA a few weeks ago, in his Audi R8, diagonally across 2 spaces. Also, been to the gym with Clev once or twice (friend of a friend). If anyone is interested - Nathan has the worst form for a dumbell curl I have ever seen, he throws his shoulders back and jerks the weight up, he needs to ditch his old man and move to greener training pastures. That's about it really. :rasta
sat next to barry mcguigan on a flight to belfast about 15 years ago, chatted away the whole time. bumped into chris eubank in leicester square about 10 years ago did'nt say much though. my dad worked for a bloke who was mates with john conteh and the finnegans he took me to meet them but i was too young at the time to really remember much.
I met Miguel Cotto in London and Liam Smith sat one seat away from me at the DeGale-Paul Smith fight in Liverpool for a few minutes. There were too many dirty scousers screaming like ***gots at him to say anything to him. I gave him a wink when we made eye contact though. So I'm pretty sure Beefy thinks I'm gay.
