Ended up sitting next to Ricky Hatton at the Wlad-(Should of been Haye) Chagaev fight and ended up sharing a taxi with him and his mates and going out on the **** with them in Dusseldorf.Rickys a good bloke and his mates were good lads aswell.
Met lots of boxers over the years, Honeyghan was a bit of a ****, met Lennox in the Henry Cooper gym when he first turned pro, wsas having an off day, kept getting the skipping rope trapped between his legs, didnt want to know and kept coming across to us whilst his trainer ( John Davenport ) kept shouting get back here!! Michael Watson, met him at ringside prior to his injury, such a nice guy and humble, chatted away. Used to go to a lot of Mickey Duff shows and got to know his whip, Dennis Pinching. After Bruno fought Williams at the NEC took us back stage, all the press were round Frank whilst a doctor was checking him over, may suprise alot of people but Frank isnt always laugh a minute and was quite sharp with some of the press especially a guy from the people, then they kicked the press out whilst we chatted to the big fella whilst the doctor put some stitches in above his eye. Met Nigel Benn several times, first time in Tenerfife at his training camp, I was wearing a Benn v Eubank house, he was training for Nardello, saw the hat I was waving then told me get in the ring, climbed in and Peter Defreitas gave me a set of gloves, an old lady was sitting by wife ( then girlfriend ) and said hes not gonna hit your boyfriend he wears glasses, next thing he gives me a bit of a tap to the stomach and says he thinks he can take me! The old lady nearly spat her false teeth out whilst my hands were shaking worse than Ali with the olympic torch, so grabbed the top rope to steady them, after a few minutes of watching me turn to jelly in front of his eyes, he put me out of my misery and got me give him a hand whilst he put neck weights on, chatted for a while after. Years later met him at a sporting do, took pics along of our 'sparing session', he said look how fit I am there and toned and u put some weight on now yer fat *******!! Chatted for ages about McCellan, how he knew he woudl go down and told everyone, bout Honeyghan being a traitor in McCalls corner when he fought Bruno etc. WEnt to another do few years later and hugged me straight away, top guy! Met Hatton loads of times when he was an undercard fighter, was always a nice lad to talk to, this is before the circus come to town!
Billy Schwer. Stevie from work gave him his number, now he won't stop hassling him for business scams Seemed like a nice bloke though, just fell out of love with the boxing business and is a motivational speaker, along with flogging this juice crap.
Went to one of these dinners with Joe Calzaghe at Aston Villas Football club, had a pic taken with him and it was 10 pound standard or 25 pound for the full monty super duper pic with fight frames on the side and stuff. I only had my cash card and they only took cash and Joe cam over said whats the problem the photographer explained and Joe said send him one I'll pay. 3 days later the super dooper version of the photo arrives. If thats a ***** cant wait to meet a decent guy. Also met Amir in Trafford center, went to the opening of Hattons gym in Hyde and seen Ali!!!! and obviously hatton had a chat with Tyson at Hatton V Lazcano at the manchester city ground. see Gomez and Robin Reid all the time.
Billy Nelson bought me a sandwich for lunch one day and showed my his new house and new puppies when molly had them x and a few boxers he has had staying with him up for sparring but i cant remember thier names. Willie Limond donated 2 tickets for a dinner nd boxing night in the thisle hotel in Glasgow one year for me and s guest and have also purchased tickets fot other fight.
Ricky Burns Kenny Anderson Wullie Limond are the most high profile I've spoke to. Hardly Hagler and Hearns though
Ive met Joe and found him a lovely fella, took time for a chat, down to earth, very friendly. Same with Enzo Macc when i saw him at the Echo show in December, had a long banter with us about his thoughts on the nights action and his comeback (he says he is definately gonna return). Matt Macklin is top man and met Freddie Roach when i took a trip to the wildcard last year....completely approachable, nice and chatty even though everyone wants a piece of him. Bomber as those who read his posts know is also salt of the earth, friendly and genuine lad. I think every famous boxer Ive met has been humble, friendly and appreciative of fans support. Met plenty of footballers and they are a completely different kettle of fish, with a couple of exceptions they have all been twats.
Met a few but Ian Napa is definitly the nicest of the lot. Met him outside the Mayweather work-out at Peacocks, before FMJ came onto the balcony, and he was geniunely, humbly shocked that anyone would care to speak to him about his career when everyone had come to see Mayweather. Happily posed for photographs and signed pictures of himself that Brian Lawerence had in his bag and happily had a conversation with us.
I have met quite a few over the years and the one fighter who had the craic and chatted about allsorts plus took as much time with all the amateur fighters who wanted pictures and autographs was Michael Gomez... He was a top lad...:good
Whever I see Enzo Mac at The Liberty, I always make a point of going across for a chat. He's got time for everyone, happy to talk, mug for pictures etc :good
