-Evander Holyfield - wasn't real sociable but wasn't mean -Manny pacquiao- nothing in particular, was friendly but didn't bother him much as well. Great to watch -paulie mallinagi - cool, very talkative -mike Tyson- met him at Janet Jackson bday party. In 2006 He let me take a pic of him but he was not sociable at all with me or any of the celebrities. He pretty much walked around looking pissed. It was actually intimidating to make I contact with him -Amir khan- very friendly and humble. - Lil Floyd- very friendly and humble. - Rjj- club at Pensacola, outside on the board walk. Cool dude. We talked dog bloodlines more than boxing. Non boxers Pepper roach- saw that I'm a Marine. Wouldn't stop talking to me...I was actually trying to get away from him after a while. But very nice. He worked the mitts with me for 6 rds for free and wore my ass out Freddie roach- cool and reserved. Was nice and took multiple pics with me due to the flash not working but I didn't really want to bother him too much cause I couldn't really feel him out and he was aboutnto train khan. Jim lampley- met him at south plaza mall. He is there all the time. I just spoke to him and was going to leave and surprisingly he initiated conversation with me about boxing my fav fighters etc...looks a helluva lot older in person. I can only imagine how merchant looks. I think that is all I have met.
I forgot about another one ! I was in a subway train once and Davey Hilton entered and stood right next to me. He spent the whole ride looking at everyone in the eyes, looking pissed. He was just coming out off jail if I remember correctly. Short story, he looked like a bad ass and I didn't say a word.
Ive seen Holyfield and Jaidon Codrington at the Atlanta Art of Boxing Center.I also was trained by Melvin Wynn,a former 160 and 175 contender who fought Bernard Hopkins,Montell Griffin,Glen Johson,Tomas Adamek, and Darius Michealski. ALso I saw Emanuel Steward at an amatear boxing in Chicago
I was sitting ringside for Hasim Rahman's last fight. It was in Mississippi and tickets were buy one get one free. Well we went expecting him to knock out the guy he was fighting and see a good ko, but the guy hung in there and rahman struggled to get rid of him. The guy more or less just quit from exhaustion. So as Rahman is getting out of the ring, I walk up to the metal divider and try to get his attention by yelling "Hey Rock! Rock!". Well he looks at me and gives me a "**** off" kind of look. I think he thought I was gonna bad mouth his performance. I asked him for a pic and his face instantly got friendly. I just wanted him to pose for a pic, but he walked over, still with gloves on and put his arm around me and took a pic with me. He apoligized about 40 times in the two minutes we were talking for his bad performance lol. He was a really nice guy and REALLY big in person. I'm going to this fiasco Roy Jones and Razor Rudduck are putting on in December, so maybe I can catch one of them.
I met RJJ Jr, one of the coolest dudes, nice friendly talkative, it was In a ski resort, he wasn't totally incognito, but you could tell he wasn't trying to get attention. Initially I think I caught him off guard maybe I annoyed him, as he seemed like he was trying to be nice but had somewhere to go and i wouldn't stop blabbering how excited I was I think when he saw how much of a genuine fan I was he warmed up it was the Most bitter sweet day ever, me RJJ, talked with him but wife did not charge camera so could not take pic with him this was in 2004. Cool dude if he had told me to **** off I would have understood and still respected him, but he didn't cool dude
when i met toney in his gym around a month ago he was pretty chill.. when I asked him for an autograph he said you have to tell me your favorite fight of mine first and I said Iran Barkley and he said my man and he signed it
I've met a ton, so I'll name the nicest and the dicks. Nicest (in no order): Angelo Dundee (a genuinely nice person, clearly loves people) Micky Ward (your average Joe who happens to be ridiculously tough and strong) Emanuel Steward (just loves what he does and has a genuine appreciation for fans) Larry Holmes (completely different than how he comes across in interviews) Carmen Basilio (he cracks me up) Cory Spinks (humble and friendly) Jose Torres (a very humble and nice man, RIP) Vito Antuofermo (mean looking ******* though) Lou Duva (another one who genuinely appreciates the fans) Orlando and Gaby Canizales (looking at them you'd never know they were fighters. extremely humble and friendly) Not a fighter/trainer, but Bert Sugar is awesome. Dicks: Pernell Whitaker (cocky *******. very full of himself, blew everyone off) Hector Camacho (also a very cocky ******* and full of himself. Didn't blow everyone off but he wasn't exactly welcoming either) Greg Haugen (a complete jackass. Showed up either high or drunk and acted very strangely. Litterally ran away from me, my father, and some other fan)
Met Lights Out Toney after his KO of Jason Robinson. Seemed really mellow and cool, was surprised. Felt bad cuz I was heckling him for being fat and lazy the first few rounds of that fight Margarito in Vegas the day after the Cotto fight, language barrier, but shook my hand, seemed nice enough. Winky and Lacy were shooting craps at 3am one night in the MGM, I was ****ed up, but they were cool and chatted a bit. JCC Jr, after a fight on a Morales undercard, super shy, seemed surprised anyone recognized him. Eric Morel the same day, after a loss, quiet but nice. Robbie Peden after the Margo/Cotto fight, I told him he was my hero for knocking the **** outta Nate Campbell when he was clowning! Gave Hitman Hearns a high five one night as well, he was the only guy who seemed the same size or bigger than I expected. These dudes look so much smaller in person! All the fighters I have met have seemed super gracious and down to earth, esp when compared to other famous people and athletes. I think the more attention, the bigger the ***** a lot of times. Probably due to boxing's status as a niche sport, I imagine that outside of PAC, DLH, Tyson, PBF, JCCsr, SRL, Ali, these guys don't get much attention from the average Joe in the states. :bbb Onto the commentators: an old teammate of mine and I were walking down the hallway at MGM before the first Pacquiao/Morales fight, and we see Larry Merchant coming toward us. I didn't know what to say, so I just said "Hey Mr. Merchant, how you doing?" He was a tiny little dude, and I go 6'6" and my buddy 6'8", so he looks up at us and asks, "Who are you guys??" Not an *******, but a genuine type tone. I laughed, didn't know what to say and responded, "Just a couple of drunken boxing fans, can we buy you a round??":hey He was a good sport and laughed, but said he had a meeting to make and moved aong after a handshake. A couple of my buddies were at a local bar/restaurant, and seated a couple tables away was Jim Lampley and his son. If you don't know, Lamps married a local sportscaster back in the day, and she has some genetic disorder, something-dactyly, which fused her fingers/toes together. Anyhow, his son has the same disorder, and my buddies overheard some drunk bitches talking loudly about his kid's hands, making fun of him, etc. Lamps played it cool, didn't pay any attention, but my friends were ****ing pissed. They said there was no way Jim and his kid couldn't hear these stupid ****s. The minute Jim's son got up to use the restroom, my one friend (wasted)jumped up and got right in these broads' faces and just verbally abused the **** out of them, calling em "heartless ****s" etc, and proceeded to have our bouncer pals toss their classless asses out the ****ing door. Lamps gave them an appreciative nod, and he and his son went on their way. Seemed classier than the guy who allegedly "got high and battered his 24 yr old girfriend" a few weeks later :huh
Met Nate Campbell at the gym in Jax beach. He was talking to the owner about dropping a decision to that one kid some people thought he won(name escapes me). Didn't want to bug him or nothing since he was about to leave and start training for another fight
