Maybe Gus just had beef with Toni. I remember them having, what should have been, a light spar. Gus really put it on Toni who was a stone and a half lighter. Al was a lovely guy. I used to borrow his bag mitts as I couldn't afford a pair back then.

Buster Douglas. Trained with him at his gym for a few months. Real laid back outside the ring and a classy down to earth guy. During training he was very serious tho and made you repeat a drill for the slightest mistake. Emphasized cardio and endurance. Albert "prince" Bell ranked #27 at super feather is from my home town of Toledo, the "glass City". I trained with him and his father on and off at their gym. Very hard worker and talented. Is a monster on the pads. Greg Wright was the former NABF light heavyweight champion. He is from Detroit and is quite the talker and entertainer. Can shoot off about everything from sports to politics to relationships and movies. Trained with him for 2 years before he fell out with the gym owner. I sparred with him a few times, hell of a jab and very cagey. He taught me the importance of footwork and forced me to balance on my toes despite being flat footed.
When I met him years ago he was on a Tyson card & I was there with Quincy Taylor who was also on the card. Nard & Bouie Fisher were great guys Interesting to talk to as well. That was the night Quincy was robbed by Keith Holmes of his WBC Middleweight belt Nard came over & said as such & that he thought Him & Quincy were the 2 best MW at that time & needed to get it on. Sadly Quincy signed with Don King & only fought once more KO'd an unbeaten Fred Moore
Hey CJ, I was ringside for that Taylor-Holmes fight, as well. It was a good fight. Holmes captured lightning in a bottle with that knockout punch. I won't call it lucky, but, had they fought 10 times, I doubt Holmes would have gotten another knockout like that. They were both throwing at the same time, and Holmes landed first. The impact of both velocities fell right on Taylor's chin.
Love that Buster is a hard task master. Talk about 'do as I say not as I do'. I'm glad that he is a nice man. He gets pilloried but he achieved something amazing that night and, talent wise, he could have been approaching Larry Holmes level if he'd really wanted it. He just didn't seem to have that mean streak. Seems like he's saved that for training his charges.
I won't go against some of the things people have said about Hopkins. Joe Calzaghe, who seems a down to Earth guy, labelled him a 'pr1ck'. But in Bernard's defence, didn't he donate a large amount of a purse- before he was earning millions - to the widow of Steve Little, the supermiddle champ from Reading, Pa. who died young? Not saying he wasn't an ass because there seems to be quite a bit of evidence to back that up but he might have some good points too. I suppose you have to cut him some slack for his upbringing, too. Although, saying that, most fighters had it tough to begin with. Dunno why I made that point. Dunno why I added that either. Better if I'd just deleted my own crap point.
Thank you, Entaowed. I've noticed you and I are on the same page quite a bit recently. Take care and I hope you keep posting.
Frankie Lucas - hard, tough, unpredictable, and violent, another lifetime ago when I was a young man, my route back to North London used to take me pass a old pub on the Archway borders called The Royal Oak and the back there was a small gym, mainly the fighters came from the George Francis stable/group, many times I would drop by to see the pros spar, Conteh, Sterling, etc, and by the way my fav armature, Dave Williams from Brookside. So on this day Lucas was working out on the bag, and speed ball, then come the time to spar and nobody, but nobody took up the invite !! doors open, who should walk in but Lotte Mwale, ha had just KOd Sibson in 1, Lotte changed to gym gear then climbed through the ropes to take on Lucas, my oh my, what a treat for me and a few others, it was an all out slugfest for 6 rounds, better than most title fights I have seen over the remaining years, time and again Francis would plead with Frankie to take it easy, all to no avail, I mean Lucas was smaller and lighter, but he didn't give a F..K , those were the days my friend..... keep well.
