You're welcome, mucker. Here you go. https://tss.ib.tv/boxing/featured-b...20340-steve-little-should-have-come-up-bigger
Did you know about the young amateur that Nard took under his wing? He was stricken with cancer Nard paid lot of his medical bills. He also paid for the young mans funeral when he passed. They say Nard was racist I dont buy it this young man was a white man. It upset Nard bad when he died
Poor Seales. I remember reading an interview with him in Boxing News in 1984. "Blind and Broke". American Boxing is, it seems to me, very hard. Randolph's training lads now isn't he ?
Yeah he perhaps didn't have it in him to be a completely dominant savage boxer the way guys like Tyson, Holmes, Bowe, etc in his era had that mental edge. He achieved a hell of a lot for an underdog from humble beginnings.
Not sure what Leo's up to these days, but if he IS training kids, it's a good fit. He'd be good at it.
Thanks CJ. More evidence that Nard was a good guy away from both the bombast of promotion and the need to psyche himself up for fights. There's a theme developing here. Perhaps the truth might be something like he was a good guy at heart who did good things to those he felt deserved it. He just didn't give two sh1ts whether you had that opinion of him or not. If that's the case he goes up in my estimations as a person.
He was really nice when I met him. But it was only for a minute. he told me I looked sharp in my suit and posed for a photo with me.
I met Archie Moore in Dec 1969 at the local Junior High on the last day of school before Christmas Vacation as I did mention before. I bumped into Carlos Monzon on my way to buying a beer on March 24 1979 at the Sugar Ray Leonard vs Daniel Gonzalez fight, which I also had previously mentioned. Both were great experiences.
Darryl Tyson. May 1994. Alexandria, Va. Talked to him at a card promoted by Eric Bottjer. I told him he fought a good fight against Roger Mayweather. He said it could have been better Kimmuel Odum January 1999. Alexandria, Va. He headlined a club show held in a basement at a shopping center next to a dive bar. He was brought in to lose by the NJ promoters but knocked out his defenseless opponent I told him I remembered watching his fights against Bonecrusher Smith and Razor Ruddock. He said he hadn't gotten paid yet and asked me to buy him a drink. I did so Lavender Johnson He was supposed to fight on that same card but his opponent dropped out at the last minute. I thought he had fallen pretty hard if he was reduced to appearing on this low level card. We first bumped each other. I was saddened when he was killed in the ring six years later Bobby Butters He was a no name opponent stopped by Maurice Blocker at the Capital Centre in April 1995. This was a mega card put on by Don King and there were several good fights on the card. Vincent Pettway iKOd Simon Brown in the main event. After getting pummeled by a fading but still decent Blocker, Butters came up into the stands and partied with fans. Bernard Hopkins December 2007. Miami, Florida I took a vacation to Miami and was at a random grocery store when I spotted Bernard standing near the checkout aisles. I was well dressed and approached him. I think he thought I was somebody else and said it's nice to see you again. Lol.
Like the use of the word " Mucker " takes me back to 1969 and Smithfield Meat Mrkt. Had lots of former fighters working there around this time, in no order, Stan Davies, Ron Barton, Freddie King, Billy Walker, Timmy Giles, Dinky White, Tommy McGovern, Alby Day, Alby Hollister, and Johnny Mcleavie. For a boxing nut like me , I had died and gone to heaven . keep well.
