dempsey refused to give a over 40 year old blind langford a shot and he fought the best while jack johnson held the title and wouldn't fight him

 

Fitz - Considering he won the HW title, just how good a middleweight was he in his prime?

Greb - to try and gauge how he would have done aganst the likes of Monzon, Hagler, Hopkins

Jimmy Wilde - to try get an opinion of how he would have fared in the modern era at Lt Fly (a weight he could have made with ease) against the Latin and Asian fighters that have been around since WWII, the type of matches that were often too hard to arrange before commercial aircraft were commonplace.

Charey Burley - is his reputation amongst the hardcore historians deserved or just a backlash against the popular vote of Ray Robinson as being the best around that weight at the time?

I hate to sound arrogant, but I bet most boxing fans here dont know their boxing history.
Thats why I come over like a ***** when I argue here sometimes, cos I suppose at the end of the day I expect people to be on my level in a boxing argument, when in reality they aint got a prayer.

In both Dempseys and Johnsons defense there was no real call for Dempsey to defend against a blind 40 year old or for an all black heavyweight title fight involving Johnson-Langford (Johnson had beaten Langford before he won the title). I think its fair to say that while Langford deserved a rematch with Johnson for the title, even Dempseys harshest critics wouldn't accuse him of ducking Langford after he'd won the title.

Harry Wills (who had a very good record against the older Langford) is a far bigger omision on Dempseys record but white America wasn't keen on black fighters challenging for the heavyweight title so soon after the nightmare of Jack Johnson.

I beleive Dempsey signed to fight Wills but the promotion was cancelled for economic and racial reasons, so a fight against a 40 year old Langford (who Wills had fought and beaten pretty regulary prior to that time) would'nt have had a hope in hell of getting off the ground.

 

I still remember when you were picking Alex Arthur over Joan Guzman.

theres footage of every mentioned here but Greb so hes my pick

although i would have loved to see Pep live in his prime

 

1)Greb - his record is amazing. I'd love to see him fight.
2)Burley - there's some footage out there but not enough!
3) WW version of Robinson - there's no footage of him at WW I think.
4) Fitz - 3 weight world champ from MW to HW. How good was he at MW?
5) WIlde - probably the greatest British fighter of all time but there's not enough footage.
