Well, lets go from 1990. 1. Roy Jones Jr - Beat some of the best from 160 to 175 and also captured HW gold, rate him in his prime and his prime achievements, he's untouchable 2. Floyd Mayweather Jr - Potentially unbeatable H2H at 130/135, was able to carry his skillset as high as 154 against fighters much bigger than him, for all the talk about fighting smaller fighters, he fought bigger fighters most his life prior to his entry at 147 - undefeated, unbested 3. Pernell Whittaker - Was at the start of his reign in 1990 and for 6 years, was near unbeatable, a shame he wasn't 10 years younger because some great matchups existed there for him. 4. Lennox Lewis - Beat everyone he ever faced, avenging losses at the time, unified the HW division and beat the guys he was supposed to beat 5. Manny Pacquaio, has won some huge fights and cannot be ignored for his ability to go through the weight classes and come up with dominant victories 6= Joe Calzaghe and Bernard Hopkins. Similar careers, Hopkins has better name recognition in his career but also has the losses, I also think they were at about the same point in their careers when Calzaghe beat him and believe the reasons Calzaghe beat him would have been even more clear 5 years earlier had they fought. 8. Evander Holyfield 9= Wlad and Vitali. Hard to seperate the brothers, as both have had the same style of career, both dominant for the better part of the decade, had Vitali beaten Lennox Lewis, you'd be talking about him as a Top 5 of the last 15 years.
Very true & he also beat him, add to that he became an ATG at 122 lbs, never lost at his peak weight. Morales was an excellent fighter, thats undisputable.
I`ll go with tiers for now, some are too hard to split...... Chavez/Whitaker ----------------------------------------- Mayweather/Jones jr/Pacquiao ----------------------------------------- Morales/Barrera/Hopkins/Lopez/Calzaghe ----------------------------------------- :good
We both know that ****, mate.... he had a bit of an off night vs Espadas (settled by KO later on in a rematch) but still never lost & otherwise beat everyone clearly, including you know who :good
Great list, id have to make a few re-arangements though. 1. Pernell Whitaker 2. Manny Pacquiao 3. Roy Jones Jr 4. Julio Cesar Chavez 5. Floyd Mayweather Jr 6. Evander Holyfield 7. Erik Morales 8. Bernard Hopkins 9. Oscar De La Hoya 10. Marco Antonio Barrera I think RJJ's dominant wins over 2 ATG's BHop & Toney aswell as his weight jumping feats, h2h ability and wins over other top fights solidifies his no.3 spot. JCC has an equally good resume but whereas RJJ dominated the ATG he fought, JCC got a draw in a very controversial decision against pea. Even the meldrick Taylor win was also controversial...still though I give him credit for that but credit also goes to RJJ for leaving no doubt as to who won his fights. I gave Floyd the benefit of doubt over Evander, if simply on the case of consistency.. Rank Erik higher than Bhop. Morales wins over a prime MAB & Pac >>>>> Smaller Tito & Oscar. Both MAB & Pac were ATG's at the weight Morales beat them at, both in resume and h2h.....cant say the same for Oscar & Tito at MW. Hopkins just squeeks above MAB & Oscar for his longevity.
Any list that does not have Bernard Hopkins at #1 is useless... I'm a Pacquiao fan, and even I realize that Hopkins is the greatest boxer of the last 20-25 years.
Too me, that's an horrendous list...but we're all entitled to our opinion. I'm curious though, what is your criteria?
I disagree with your list. I would not have Oscar De La Hoya in the top 15, and having Floyd Mayweather Jr above Evander Holyfield doesn't make any sense to me either. Still, it's a big improvement on the source material that began the thread.
I'm sticking with my list. I don't see how anyone could leave out Evander Holyfield. Greatest Cruiserweight of all time, moved up and defeated such men as Riddick Bowe, Mike Tyson, George Foreman, Michael Moorer, Larry Holmes, Ray Mercer, John Ruiz, Hasim Rahman, and should have been given the nod over Valuev. A wonderful resume by contemporary standards, and his skillset, heart, and longevity speaks for itself. He has to be on the list for me.
