How about it. He's probably the most unliked fighter for me I can currently recall. Maidana dropping him was awsome!
I would occasionally see Holmes in an airport during his championship days and there was never people around him seeking a conversation or even an autograph.
Seems recently Teofimo Lopez is trying to get on this list. Now excuse me while I browse Amazon for a Flying Bat-Suit™.
Hey, I grew up such a Looney Tunes/Bugs Bunny-Road Runner Hour fan that even today I feel very strongly that THE MOUSE MUST DIE!!!! When the PTA deemed the Bugs Bunny-Road Runner Hour to be the most violent show on television, we kids were SOOO proud! Screw what Florida's government is trying to do to Disney World. Just bomb that scabies infested place out of existence. Mom LOVED it because it gave us kids exposure and appreciation for classical music and opera. (The Rabbit of Seville anyone?)
[QUOTE="2) Art Aragon — The original Golden Boy filled arenas on the West Coast mostly with people who wanted to see him get his ass handed to him. He obliged on a number of occasions, notching some meaningful wins but also losing his share of main events. He was a sort of celebrity about town who ran in fast circles and IIRC was associated with a few starlets of his day. I think people in general just resented the fact that he wasn’t world class but carried himself like he was a huge attraction and as if was above it all. He was especially disliked by Mexican fans, probably because he beat some of their favorites. Who else belongs on this list?[/QUOTE] Below is a small quote from a 1988 Los Angeles Times article about Aragon. A quarter century after retiring he was still a character. “Hey, in the 1950s, I owned this town. Ask anyone who was around then. And then those . . . Dodgers came to town. I had to start booking my fights around Dodger games. I hate ‘em. When I get up in the morning and see they’ve lost, it makes my whole day.”
Don't think I've ever heard a fighter as roundly booed as Greg Haugen was when he entered the ring for the first Pazienza fight. It was in Vinny's hometown, but Haugen's mouth in the pre-fight build-up had a lot to do with the booing. He was booed quite a bit vs. Chavez as well IIRC. He seemed to relish the villain role...
They couldn’t have been that bad for us - certainly not so bad as to induce some of the terrible crimes we see/hear of today. I mean, ACME didn’t exist, how could we even carry out our evil designs?
I just recently rewatched Ali v Liston 2. Interesting to the hear the very loud cheers for Sonny only to be followed equally loud boos for Ali upon their respective introductions. Even after Miami, it seems Sonny had a great opportunity for redemption, especially as Ali had since positioned himself as the perceived villain post Miami. Of course the chaotic outcome in Maine sealed Liston’s fate in terms of public favour - crazy since Liston wasn’t the only player involved in the mayhem.
Honestly I don’t like seeing anyone lose. Unless they’re being a demeaning bragger. Go out give everyone your best but don’t make a show when you kill thousands of their brain cells- it takes balls to get in the ring give them the respect they deserve no matter how many levels below they might be.
I never had any time for Teddy Reid after his bout with Emiliano Valdez. It was a tough fight, Valdez gave as good as he got, but in the 10th Reid got to him and knocked him out near the ropes. With the fight over, and before the stricken fighter's corner could tend to him, Reid decides to walk over to the ropes where Valdez was laying and start BS'ing with his homies at ringside. With Valdez laying there right under him like yesterday's garbage and he's talking smack with his buddies ignoring the body under him. Let's go one further. The stricken fighter had to be stretchered from the ring due to his injuries. Let's go one further, Valdez died from his injuries. See why I had no time for Teddy Reid?
Ah,, great insight. We all know Larry had a ‘tude, didn’t know for sure though that he took it all the way down the line. It’s one thing for any celebrity to send strong signals indicating that they want fans to stand clear - but when it’s a HW Champ or ex Champ exuding those vibes - well, it’s no wonder that their wish is instantly granted.
