In Australia Barry Michael set himself up as a boxing heel to goad Lester Ellis into giving him a title shot. It worked a treat too as it was a massive fight here in Australia even though it was the then lightly regarded IBF junior lightweight belt they were contesting. It was broadcast on prime time free to air TV and huge numbers tuned in to watch darling Lester shut Barry’s big mouth.

It didn’t turn out that way though.

*Really good fight too incidentally. Well worth a look.

Oscar Delahoya was a polarizing fighter....he has just as many haters as he does fans .....and I don’t know one black person that likes him lol

His main fanbase seemed to be women. Not bad for him or boxing lol. Actually, later on in his career when he took on Floyd Sr. as his his trainer and fought just about everybody, he seemed to gain grudging respect from fans of all backgrounds.

Floyd Mayweather Jnr for sure. Plenty of casuals I know literally watch Floyd to see him lose, and it never happened. His confidence, skill and fighting style definitely didn't mesh with them.

To be fair Oscar just about fought everybody before Floyd took over as trainer as well.

For a guy who fought relatively few fights Oscars resume is stacked. It’s why I rank him highly despite picking up some L’s (some undeserved too) along the way. There weren’t many soft touches along Oscars journey.

Jimmy Robertson on the west coast. Long before Roger Mayweather was called the Mexican Assassin, this was Robertson. Made a big thing that 'No Mexican alive can beat me!' And he was tallying them up. Mexican Americans and nationals were lining up at the gate to see him get beat.
