He was rarely on the ground because he has a great takedown defence. Whenever he was taken down, he could get back up quite easily. This is because he is a very good wrestler, and it was these skills that allowed him to keep the fight standing up. It never mattered that his punching technique was not that great, he only had to be better than his opponents, who were not top pro boxers. Although I enjoy UFC, I will be concentrating on the Skelton fight. UFC is not looking like it will replace boxing anytime soon, despite all the talk.
Why is chuck liddels record something like won 12 lost 5 then? Liddel gets beat worse in a boxing ring than a boxers gets beat in MMA.
GSP and cro cop come to mind I too am a big fan of boxing and mma..it pains me when ignorant ppl (warren, reporters etc) try to trash mma as being brutal, savage and requiring no skill. Brutal? Stoppages are alot faster in mma...and losing by a submission is better than being punched in the head for 12 rounds. True fight fights should enjoy both mma and boxing...
Precisely and both of those guys are going to the hall of fame. There not just strikers with an "Ok takedown" defense there exceptional fighters with EXCELLENT takedown defenses.
you coming round to watch the Skelton fight anyway, is Jones / trinidad not on later as well, about 1AM cause its on the eastcoast?
Noticed Setanta started showing UFC ****, is the Newcastle card not PPV though, or is it free on Setanta?
I will be watching the boxing. However it's hardly fair as a contest. It's like putting a superior sport like football out against the Superbowl and then showing Bolton v Sunderland
Your quite correct Scurla I know hardly anything about the sport been to a couple of shows and was largely unimpressed. I've seen that Paul Daly a couple of times and he was the only one who I watched where I thought 'he looks good'.
As other had mentioned Liddell's success come from his wrestling ability. His strikes are what win him fights but his wrestling ability sub defence are what stop him from being Huston Alexander. Liddells athletic background http://www.extremeprosports.com/full_contact_fighting/chuck_liddell.html As of 2003, Liddell had earned his purple belt in BJJ. http://64.233.183.104/search?q=cache:xpXIA26ld7MJ:www.subfighter.com/news.php%3Fid%3D70+%22chuck+liddell%22+%22purple+belt%22&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=5&gl=uk
It's not bad at all, in fact it's pretty good. Problem is it's gone a bit stale recently, too many boring fights and not enough genuine characters.
The thing about WWE is that there seems to be no rules. I've seen fighters get out the ring and hit other fighters with chairs and the refs do next to nothing.
