Right bit of strange one this but need some assistance. I have a 14 year old nephew who is a sound kid love him to bits (no Homo!) my sister has given him a good upbringing but in an all to familiar story he has ended up going down a bit of a wrong path gotten in with the wrong crowd. anyway last week my sister got the knock at the door by the old bill and long story short its some pretty serious (and violent) charges. My sister is worried it might be too late for him to turn his life around but I think if I took him to my boxing club it would have a very positive effect on him. speaking from experience the discipline and self confidence you gain from boxing at that age is golden. He's on bail till november and If he does stay out of nick (a big if by the sounds of it) I want to offer to take him however I know she won't want to, especially as he has allready shown a violent streak and she will see it as sharpening his tools so to speak. and I already offered a couple of years ago and got a firm no. anyway the reason for my post does anyone have links to any articles or books that outline the positive influence boxing can have on young lives or even state a more eloquent argument than i've managed so far and I'll go back to her with a stronger case.
Here you go mate. http://www.youthoutlook.org/news/view_article.html?article_id=313b7706811bd18b96e53f4b971be5af http://www.doncasterfreepress.co.uk...ng_saved_me_from_life_of_crime_woods_1_497063 http://www.punchng.com/Articl.aspx?theartic=Art200701060133337 There is another but can't get the full article of Hopkins talking about how it changed his life. Good luck and hope the lads gets head sorted.
yup the charges are pretty serious mate not going into it because it will probly make the local rag! but obviously you get charged with the highest thing possible and then they get you to agree to a lesser charge but after speaking to my sis on the weekend even considering its his first offence a young offenders center is a possibility! ****ing hope not tho worse place for him!
hope it works out for him, he's got people round that care about him which is a big + :good whats your sister views on boxing then, just thinks it mad brawling :think
Yeah don't think she's a big fan to be fair think she just see's it as making him harder and better at fighting (not entirely false!) but I think it has a calming influence your less likely to go out a get in scrapes bit like carl froch was saying about the rioters not being young boxers in griffs video thread.
hopkins would be a great example of how he used to get into trouble but then turned his life around. fill her in and show her the article where he was friends with that kid who had cancer. proper teary eye stuff, i'm sure Mandanda posted the link in here before
I think that is the misconception that people get that its just fighting A rugby tackle in the street isn't rugby If you pull a sword in the street on somebody it isn't fencing If you use your fists in a fight on the street it isnt boxing Completely different things
It's like anything in life, people will use it how they want to. Like how kids take rap music on board. Some listen to violent rap yet don't go around stabbing/shooting people. Some do sadly. Some people love to fight, some have never stepped in a boxing gym in there life. Some fighters still get involved in street fights outside clubs with tragic endings. A large majority don't because they take the positive side of things. I for one was a aggressive kid and loved fighting but boxing always taught me never to use it on the weak and only use it in self defence. You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink it but i'd rather have tried then not. I personally see it more as a positive effect then negative. Some kids/adults will never stop being violent in normal life. The people within Amateur clubs are special people with many having a gift to work with troubled children. I hope she don't deny him a chance to be helped.
True! Presumably its a transferable skill with a slightly sharper more lethal sword though...but the point stands im standing by it :hat
he needs himself bought down a peg or two, hope he gets hammered in sparring and might show him some respect.
nothing that quite takes a wannabe hardmans(or hardlad in this case) huimlity level up a few stages than getting thrown into sparring and getting embarrassed by a decent fighter. happened to me when I first joined a club and started showing off, I wasnt a violent little criminal though lol
yeh never was a little thug, but i thought i could go in and win against everyone around my size due to my agression, beat my mate whohad trained as long as i did. so thet put me in with a boxer with skill and my head got jabbed off for 3rounds straight. lol
