Maybe a bronze medal if he is very lucky with the draw like Wilder was in 2008.

92+ is pretty stacked, don't think he medals. His h2h record against the field isn't great:

Abullayev has his number (Moindze is 0-2 against him), and he lost to Kunkabayev, Tiafack, Chaloyan and Teremoana in their only meetings.

He holds a victory over Mourad Kadi, and split a pair with both Ayoub and Teixeira.

That is 3-8 against his peers in eleven encounters, with seven of eight men defeating him.

He is incredibly undersized for a super HW, just 5'11" and not exactly shredded either - and he's a slow southpaw with a low work rate.

It would take something beyond home cooking for him to place. It would take haute cuisine on a scale never before seen. :sisi1

is there a reason why they got rid of so many divisions. its has cramped the whole scene into jungle there.

    mad though.
all divisions in the mens has a Kazak or Uzbek fighter. 14 fighters
USA, Puerto Rico, GB, Aus collectively have the same..so odd.

Just wondering if the reduction in male boxers is politically motivated...

Gender parity in numbers of fighters (male:female ratio) but 63(!) fewer male boxers...

for GB Orie is the best hope..but he is outclassed by so many guys just on his side of the pyramid. maybe...maybe knick something.

Rosie Eccles is a good shout. but again class at wetler is stacked.

with the iba getting rightfully poisened, bulleted in the skull twice. stabbed, wrapped in a carpet and dropped into the river. this is going to be so interesting. all the qualifiers have no real tournamanet structures. genuinely why i think many of the central asia players got competitors in as many as they could because they were reletivly close by.

historically though, covid has dropped a lot of ams into pros that has undermined a lot of good 2nd choice ams in their divisions to fight for their places when those pros try to get back into an am set up. so the competition for indivisal spots nationally at every country is shockingly tough. great. but post covid and the disaster of the tokyo olympics and the amount of fighters who had to just out of real life problems get jobs or go pro left a deluge of strong 50+ fight grown age athletes globally.

So while more quality fighters are in the olympiad and you are seeing less chaff 3rd place finish african box off qualifiers. ever remember seeing the morrocan or egyptian heavyweight. 6'1 280lbs who get a job because they have been around for long enough time.
then again this has led to bizzare qualifications with the 'Universality placing'. allowing smaller nations the carte blanche to be entered. amazing but dunno how effective it will be in the future. but...cool. big up Pemberton Lele

more qualifications since the last 4 years. with a new system in place. it's been a weird weird post covid time. Got to remind ourselves that.

When they added it in 2012. It was jam packed for them. the womans game had to add divisions...inevitable. when you had jonas moving up a few divisions just to be able to compete. She was way undersized. Was she not heavier than when she won her last title?

also….New system. Had tennis just been introduced you’d think that an equal parity was expected, no?

so yeah I guess it is ‘politically’ motivated but it can only get bigger. We might have lost a lot of good ams this game you gained a ton more from other countries and genders….so…aye? It’s a bit ugly but then again we never had such a crazy few years. They’ll need to add more divisions next olympics no questions but are we gonna see female heavyweights? Maybe a 168+ free limit like in other weight based sports.

I can’t find him right now but there is a good lad on Instagram who is doing a run down of near every Olympic boxer. When I find him I’ll add it to the thread

whats any Aus thoughts on Jacob Cassar not getting the nod? at 36-0, literally only undefeated amatuer though only at junior level. only 17. got overlooked for being too young. seems ludicrous. if you are good enough you are old enough. why didnt somebody just mov him up to other tournaments?

He's a Lightweight & still a junior, as you mentioned. There's no Lightweight division in the Olympics for men any more. So he would have to fight at Light Welter. Harry Garside, a medalist from the last Olympics, has been selected at Light Welter. Compare Harry's international experience with Jacob's. Harry broke his hand against Brazil earlier this year but still managed to win both fights. I don't see any problem with his selection. Jacob can contend for Los Angeles in 2028 (if boxing is still in it).

So it's now a mix of amateur prospects and pros jumping back in the pool to claim Olympic glory. Non-zero chance that some of the actual really good young current amateurs don't reach the medal stages.

All the Americans are under 30 and still simonpures:
    • Joshua Edwards, 92+kg (Super Heavy) - won gold at the Pan-Am Games last year
    • Omari Jones, 71kg (Middleweight) - won silver at the AIBA world championships in 2021
    • Jahmal Harvey, 57kg (Featherweight) - won gold at the AIBA world championships in 2021
    • Roscoe Hill, 51kg (Flyweight) - won silver at the AIBA world championships in 2021

Nobody repping the stars & stripes in the 63.5kg (Light Welter), 80kg (Light Heavy), or 92kg (Heavy) categories.

Even paltrier showing for the Brit squad:
    • Delicious Orie, 92+kg (Super Heavy) - won gold at Commonwealth & Euro Games (2022/23 repsectively)
    • Lewis Richardson, 71kg (Middleweight) - won silver at 2022's Euros, didn't medal at the AIBA worlds.
    • Patrick Brown, 92kg (Heavy) - baby of the bunch at 24; had only fought domestically before Qualifiers.

Diaz probably couldn't make the Cuban Olympic team, that is why he defected, and got Bulgarian citizenship so he can box at the Olympics. This thing is common in wrestling, where making the Russian Olympic team (now called "Individual Neutral Athletes") is very hard due to stiff competition. So a lot of wrestlers from Russia moved to other Eastern European countries where they got citizenship, and now they can wrestle at the Olympics representing their "new" countries.

Yes, that's how it works. There was so much talent in Cuba for a while, that They could easily send 2 teams to the Olympics if They were not limited to one athlethe per division.
At Heavyweight, We have 3 Cubans competing and all with medal chances. Reyes for Spain, Alfonso for Azerbaijan and La Cruz for Cuba.
