Anyone have any suggestions for boxing books I can read up on - be it good stories / characters or coverage of an actual event / fight? Already read four kings / hands of stone / becoming holyfield / michael watson bio but definitely looking for more Cheers
funny you should start this thread... not 20 minutes ago i got "in this corner...40 world champions tell their story" via the postman....after a recommendation from here.
"In This Corner" is a good one. "Corner Men" by Ronald K. Fried is the best boxing book I've read so far. There's also a coffee table size book called "Muhammad Ali : The Glory Years" which is excellent and includes many great photos.
Life and Reminiscences of a 19th century gladiator By John L. Sullivan http://openlibrary.org/books/OL6988960M/Life_and_reminiscences_of_a_19th_century_gladiator
I know this isn't what your looking for...but a great text book on boxing is Jack Dempseys Championship Fighting
I wanna get this this one real bad. Tell me how it is!! Unforgivable Blackness was the best boxing book I read, and generally one of the best books I read period. King Of The World by David Remnick is great Im also reading "In The Corner" about boxings great trainers, and their stories. It's awesome Also, I'm reading "America On the Ropes" which is a huge picture book all about the Johnson Jefferies fight. Interesting info in there I never knew before, such as John L Sullivan being one of the first people to walk up to Johnson and congratulate him after destroying Jefferies.
I saw the documentary unforgivable blackness...not sure how much it follows the book. But at one point it basically said that Jack Dempsey was afaird to fight Johnson....which is clearly ******ed. But otherwise it was good stuff.
The book has more information about it. I also don't think Dempsey was afraid, but he sure went out of his way not to fight a 40 year old Johnson
"Give Him To The Angels" was good, I got it off Amazon. The other Harry Greb book was also verrry good. My favorite author for boxing though is Randy Roberts and Skehan's "Rocky Marciano: Biography of a First Son" is incredible. His story of Rocky's rise to the top is a must read.
Norman Mailer's "The fight" is a must read Mailer's chronicle of The Rumble in the Jungle is nothing short of a masterpiece
Hugh McIvanney - McIvanney on boxing. Excellent book. Takes in fights from the middle 60's through to the 90's.
