Best I've ever read is Jack Doyle the Gorgeous Gael. Not necessarily because of his achievements in the ring but his life in general. Doyle was born John Doyle in abject poverty in Ireland and changed his name to Jack in honour of his hero Jack Dempsey. He was born in the garrison town of Cobh and would regularly fight all comers in bare knuckle fights when only 12 years of age and would regulalry knock out soldiers based in the local barracks. He decided to go to England to fight and lied about his age and joined the British Army. As a 17 year old novice he knocked out the reigning British middleweight champion in his first sparring session. He was commissioned out of the army within a year having won the army heavyweight champsionship, stopping all but one of his opponents. He was an accomplished tenor and his dream was to "fight like Jack Dempsey and sing like the Count John McCormack". He earned and squandered a fortune before he even reached his 25th birthday. He loved wine, women and song and married the Mexican actress Movita and starred in two motion pictures himself. He died a peniless, homeless alcoholic on the steets of London and lived a remarkable life. For further info buy the book...
yeah, some ladies man. a few days after he was let out of jail in the states some bird dumped harold hughes to get with doyle. he was also shagging the mother and daughter in the dodge family. interestingly and quite appropriately the cover of the book has him flat on his back; [ame]http://www.amazon.co.uk/Jack-Doyle-Gorgeous-Desmond-Lynam/dp/1843511231[/ame]
Just ordered, 'The Sweet Science', 'In this corner' and 'The Professional'. Does Heinz have any other boxing books out? Preferably a 'The Sweet Science' style of one. I am right now reading Douglas Centruy's book on Barney Ross and I am really enjoying it, his research is amazing and Ross is so interesting and varied.
I'm sure you must have it already (not sure if it's even been mentioned yet in the thread...) but "The Book Of Boxing" by WC Heinz is also one of the best boxing books I've ever read - a masterpeice really:good
Why dont you get the new book on ALi called The legend of Muhammad Ali In it you will find memorbilia from his career, fight tickets of his big fights, etc. I even found a copy of his petition to have his license reinstated (Cassius Clay vs USA)
In this corner....I have this book, its the very best, every hardcore fan should own this/ by Peter Heller. 40 world Champions tell their story it encopesses 7 decades of fighters from the teens to the 1970's
In this corner got lost in the post unfortunately, still haven't found another second hand copy. Anyone know a good place to get it from?
I am suprised no one has mentioned Johnny Tapias autobiography "Mi vida loca"... I knew Johnny has had a tough life, but wow!! Cant think of too many fighters that have gone thru the stuff Johnny has..... Hes been thru so much it sounded unreal. Read the book in one night couldnt put it down.
What a movie for Hollywood. And wouldn't Christian Bale be perfect for playing Jack Doyle. They can even dub in the voice of my favorite Irish Tenor John McCormack. Cameras, action !
Yes GP. W.C. Heinz and Ward wrote a great anthology boxing book titled "The Fireside Book of Boxing ". Great read !, P.S. Includes the best chapter of Bob Fitzimmons by the great American poet Edgar Lee Masters who saw every heavyweight ringside from Bob Fitz to Joe Louis..A don't miss book !
