So the WBC and WBA both came along in the 60s, and the IBF and WBO came along in the 80s.

Does anyone know a lot about how things operated at different periods of boxing history prior to this? How were rankings/champions/contender status' determined? How was it in the earliest days predating the 1900s, and how did it evolve, in gradations, to what we've arrived at today?

Anyone have any information, or good reading source suggestions on this topic?

The Police Gazette had legit boxing rankings back in the olden days.

The NBA were the precursor to the WBA and were posting ratings at least as early as the 30s.
