What a disgusting stoppage. 9=10 in boxing.

Nowadays, you can't even wait until 9 to recover anymore

The Guy was down for 18 seconds from the time he took a knee. If your counting in Spanish it's longer ...how come no one sees this.

at first i thought Benje stopped the fight on 9, but after seeing it in slow mo a few times, you can see by how many fingers he's holding up on the count. he stopped it on 10.

you have to be upright and ready to go before the count of 10. ref did his job. you do get some refs who will let it go if you're up on 10. some don't. just the way it goes.

From what I understand "beating the count" doesn't matter. The referee can stop the fight at anytime. Beating the count is just a general measuring stick (of sorts).

If you're a fighter, you've got to know better than to wait until 9 to start getting up.

Most of the guys who do that are a)genuinely hurt, and can't get up or b) are looking for a way out that still gives them the right to complain that they were screwed and allows them to save face

Thank you! Don't understand what people don't get about this.

Malik Scott did the exact same thing against Chisora and people complained about it calling it a British stoppage. Well look, the rules were applied the exact same way in the USA.

Fighters need to understand the rules better, learn how to count to 10, and realize that getting up milliseconds before 10 doesn't cut it.

But as you said, they are looking for a way out without looking like a quitter.

Come on man. The guys is not counting, he is just basing it off the ref, as any other fighter would.

What is So hard to understand about that?!

The fight was just starting, Ortiz was not in danger of serious damage. The ref should be able to make that distinction. There is a huge difference between a fighter who is in serious danger compared to a fighter who was clearly just trying to buy time

These refs have to understand that the people pay to see these guys fight. I thought he was up at nine (although he was on the floor longer than 10, he only has to go by the count) If it is close let the guy continue, and reallly to me it wasn't close. Good thing this guy wasn't reffing Tyson-Douglas or the fight would have been over in the 8th. I swear, some of these refs think the people are paying to see them referee

Ortiz was up at 9 and should have been allowed to continue. Estevez knew he'd screwed up that's why he refused to be interviewed. Ortiz should get a rematch
