Yes Red, George used the cross arm defence during his second career, courtesy of 'ol Archie no doubt.

This one is by far the most comfortable 4 me.
The high guard Starling style was almost impossible for me. Couldnt snap my jab out the way I wanted to and it was too hard to maintain my hands up constantly.
Peekaboo was plain too exhausting 4 me and again couldnt get my jab off the way I wanted.
After a back surgery cross armed was the only way I could continue to spar anyway.

Ragamuffin, I sure bet that George would have benefitted greatly from the cross arm back in his younger days, don't you?

I am not too sure Red. If you watch George's early fights he seemed pretty good at parrying away his opponents punches. Something many people overlook unless you watch his fights several times over. He also had a great way of just blocking punches by holding his arms up. Simple and simple looking, but effective enough. I think the cross-arm defence of later years may have hindered the forward steam rolling earlier George.

Did old George start using the x armed defence straight away In his comeback or was it something gradually introduced raga? A few of his earlier cb fights I don't recall him using it, but then again perhaps there wasn't time!

Yes Fergy, he used it in his comeback more or less from the start, but it wasn't all the time, just in certain situations. Foreman-Cooney bout is a good example.

I don't think he used it from the start. He didn't use it against guys like Rocky Sekorski, Guido Trane, or Carlos Hernandez. He definitely did it by the time he got to Cooney.

Perhaps, and this is a assumption, he only used it against guys he saw as a bit of a danger. Cooney certainly was.

Come to think about it, I think you're right about that...I remember watching young George and noticed that he swatted away his opponents punches pretty good..and that parrying accompanied his pushing away a man at the shoulders.

Can u imagine facing big ol George lumbering forwards with those tree trunk arms crossed. Pretty scary, knowing what those arms were capable of!
