Ok, so I thought I'd draw up a list of all the ones that are worth a watch, for the benefit of all of us here who enjoy watching documentary film about the sport and its characters. There are some I've left off but will probably add (HBO's mythmaking Legendary Nights series and some of the 24/7's, for example), some that I'm sure I've forgotten while hastily compiling this starting line-up, and others that I haven't seen and that I'm relying on fellow posters to turn me on to. Here's what I've got so far. Feel free to nominate additions. EDIT: Thread revised and updated here.
2017 -CounterPunch [Mandalay Sports Media (MSM)] Pretty awesome documentary that follows 3 fighters one of them being Peter Quillin, and it interviews several ATGs regarding the state of boxing today, including ODLH, Sugar Ray Leonard, Bernard Hopkins, and even big mouthed Paulie Malignaggi is in it.
Sportcenturies' boxing documentaries were pretty good. This content is protected This content is protected This content is protected
Good stuff, haven't seen it yet, will do soon. I'll edit it into post #1 once there's a few more nominations to add with it.
Beyond the glory was also very nice. This content is protected This content is protected This content is protected
I think I've only seen the Hagler and Ali ones. If anyone has a complete list for me to add, it'd be welcome. Otherwise, I'll root them all out later. I'm not sure that I've seen any BTG, but I'll look into them and add them.
Give it a watch, its a good documentary that follows three fighters at three different stages. One is an amateur fighter refusing to turn pro because he is trying to make it to the Olympics, another is a young amateur who prefers to become a pro as soon as he can and we get to see is transition, and the last is a pro fighter which is Peter Quillen, and we see his ups and downs. Very worth watching.
2001 -Split Decision [La Sonrisa Productions] Follows the Story of Jesus "El Matador" Chavez, shows how he is a rising prospect in Chicago and then gets deported to Mexico for a crime he committed as a youth, and continues his work as a pro fighter but has a hard time being accepted by Mexicans despite him being born there because he was raised in the U.S.
There was a channel 4 documentary I watched a while ago, think it was called 'Bare knuckle boxer' on youtube. It was part of Channel 4 series called 'Georgian underground' It covered the story of Tom Cribb, Bill Richmond and Tom Molineaux back in the early 1800's. I found it pretty good
The Joe Calzage one from a couple of years ago I cant remember the name now I remember the film though we brought tickets to see the film in Cardiff and then meet him They showed the film but Joe never turned up !!!!!!!!!!!! So a few drinks in Cardiff instead ! My wife did meet him at a book signing once in Cardiff He signed the book and guess what she forgot my name we had been together 20 years (bit longer now !)
Was it called Mr. Calzaghe? If so, I was strangely unaware of it 'til just now. I'll add it to the list later and have a watch when I can get hold of it.
I've just watched recently Ring of Fire : The Emile Griffith Story. Good documentary, very interesting, I recommend it to every boxing fan.
