    Hey guys,

First of all I'd like to apologize if this is the wrong section to be posting in.

But umm, I'm trying to start up a new fight gear company that specializes in boxing and eventually mma equipment.

I've been looking through the forums to see some of your thoughts on a bunch of different gear and have got lots of great ideas from what I've read already.

The first product I'm looking to design is a training boxing glove, and I was wondering if I could get some feedback from you guys on what you want to see in a glove.

I came up with a few questions that I really wanted to get opinions on, but any other comments or feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Basically my goal is to provide a high quality glove (and gear) with end consumer, which is most of you guys, in mind. Hopefully you guys can help me in really figuring out exactly what u guys like or dislike in the equipment u guys buy.

    Thanks in advance guys

ps. I know I have a lot of questions but you dont have to answer em all

    1. What does "training gloves" mean to you?

    2. When you first receive boxing gloves, what are some things that you immediately notice?

    3. When you first put on some gloves, what are some things that you immediately notice?

    4. What features did you like best from the training gloves you have owned previously?

    5. What features did you think could improve on training gloves you have owned previously?

    6. What features do you think are needed but for some reason no-one seems to provide?

    7. In terms of materials, do you prefer, and why:

    exterior: cowhide or goat leather?
exterior: leather wrist contact or some synthetic material?

interior: nylon taffetta lining or leather lining
interior: anti-bacterial or not? do you feel anti-bacterial linings reduce smell?

    stitching: materials
    stitching: single/double, etc

padding: any company you like that does this best in your perspective? why?
padding: if on the scale of padding cleto reyes was 0 and winning was 10, what would you like?
padding: What material padding do u prefer most? Polyeurathane? PVC? other?

    8. In terms of functionality, do you prefer, and why?
    a) hook and loop vs lace up
    b) thumbs attached at top to finger area or not?
    c) how far should your palm be able to open? (10 is completely open, 0 is fist form)
    d) would you prefer more padding around the wrist or on your knuckles?

    9. In terms of availability / handling:
    a) what are you're biggest pet peeves?
    b) what shipping method have you found to be most reliable?
    c) what shipping method have you found to be most damage-free?
    d) when you want to order something, how long are you willing to wait (1wk, 2wk, 1mo)

    10. In general what are the things that makes you fall in love with a glove and what are things that really put you off?

    11. any other comments?

Woah alot of choices, well the first think I would like is a nice snug compartment but not overly tight. 2nd is how the weight is distributed throughout the glove, if you can make a 16 oz feel like a 12 oz then that's a great glove (Triumph United Japanese Heatseekers).

I personally would stick to cowhide, but then again winning uses synthetic material that works great.

I'm not too sure about interior, but nylon always feels nice :D.

    Double stitching for sure.

I'll add more if want later

hey thanks for the response.. I really appreciate the input.

Having a snug compartments a great idea. I've heard way too many people complain about the glove being too loose.

As far as having the weight distributed throughout the glove. I'm just wondering how I could test something like that. I'd be using third part manufacturers, so I'm just not sure how I could fully test how well the weight was actually distributed after production.

Cow Hide was also my personal choice but there's also some great gloves from goat skin out there, like Cleto Reyes. So I figured I leave that open to the people as well.

Now as far as design is concerned, do most people generally prefer classical designs, or some of the more stylistically innovative gloves like some of Rival's models?

    Here are my two cents.

    1. What does "training gloves" mean to you?

Versatility. Training gloves can be used on focus mitts and/or bags and/or your sparring partner. They are durable and balance protection of your hands, especially during bag work, and that of your partner's face.

    2. When you first receive boxing gloves, what are some things that you immediately notice?

Appearance, i.e. cosmetic design, and outer construction, i.e. leather quality and stitching.

    3. When you first put on some gloves, what are some things that you immediately notice?

Lining, wrist support, hand compartment fit and weight distribution.

    6. What features do you think are needed but for some reason no-one seems to provide?
Quick lacing of the glove. As regards information, hand compartment fit and a simple cross-section depicting the padding layer by layer would be helpful.

    7. In terms of materials, do you prefer, and why:
exterior: probably cowhide, but I've never owned goatskin gloves. leather wrist contact - as compared to synthetic closures on many MT gloves, which I found to be bulky, stiff and akin to plastic.
interior: nylon taffetta lining - soft and kind on the skin, never scratchy. anti-bacterial - yes, please!
    stitching: double is necessary.
padding: I am very fond of my Hayabusa bag gloves, because:
    - It is compact. Bulkiness compromises ease of movement, accuracy etc.
    - It 'pops'. If I can't feel and hear the impact, I can't judge my technique.
    - It protects me. I feel the impact, but I feel no pain.
    - They arrived very stiff, but it only took me under a week to break them in.
    - They conform to my fist. But, they don't visibly bend out of shape.

    8. In terms of functionality, do you prefer, and why?
    a) Hook and loop for ease of use, until someone overhauls the lacing system. Elasticity could be used in the closure to improve fit and support.
    b) The thumb must be locked.
    c) Opening the palm is unnecessary. Having sufficient flexibility to form my own fist is crucial.
    d) Knuckles. The wrist doesn't need to be 'padded'; it just needs to be supported and held in place.

    9. In terms of availability / handling:
    a) Unable to reach the seller by phone. Over-charging for worldwide shipping and charging extra for return handling. Also, the return window can be unreasonable. E.g. It takes 14 days of my package to arrive. The return window is 10 days from date of purchase.
    d) 1 month.

    10. In general what are the things that makes you fall in love with a glove and what are things that really put you off?
Love: Comfort, especially a snug hand compartment, and ease of movement. If boxing gloves fit like boxing boots, that would be a dream come true.
I couldn't put it better myself.
Hate: Looseness, cuffs that almost reach my elbow... and pink - why do all gloves for women come in lurid pink?

    11. any other comments?

The reviews on the internet are difficult in making the right decision on a boxing glove. Everybody has there own opinion about the perfect glove. One's opinion might sound good but it might not be the same opinion you have. What I recommend is try a glove out. Next time when it comes to purchasing another glove try something else. After purchasing 5 different gloves you will have a better idea on what you will like to use going forward.

If Reyes are made out of goat skin then goat skin must not be bad at all. As for a weight distribution I wouldn't know how you could test that. Maybe it's just me, but I hate when my gloves are top heavy, I guess the only way you could control that is by the type of padding you are using and where you put it at on the glove.

Hey guys, I appreciate the time u guys are taking out to help me out. It's true, every individual has a different perception of what a good glove is. My whole thing, is to try and get a general idea of what exactly it is that people like and dislike, and then working with the design.

I mean we're still in a very early stage of doing this. But I feel that a business like this should be based on a quality product and top notch customer service. I dont want to give people a product and convince them they should like it using marketing techniques. I wanna build a glove that people want because it's what they asked for.

.. keep the feedback coming guys... I'm taking notes!

As far as design not many people care about a loud glove such as rival. I would suggest multicolors such as grant for looks. As far as protection goes is based on the individual, some people like feeling the bag bang across their knuckles, other like the extra protection.

If your designing gloves that can be used for sparring make sure the thumb is behind the padding on the front of the gloves. Take a look at everlast gloves and the thumb sticks out to the sides a bit and when you hit pads your thumbs get jammed pretty often so it needs to be behind/tucked into the side well. Hopefully thats clear.

I have to agree that Grant has the prettiest gloves on the market, color and design wise.

I can't comment on the construction of the equipment, but I would like to see boxing gear that had more of a modern style and appeal. When I look threw ringside magazine or other catalogs I always like the appeal that MMA gear has. I am not saying that boxing needs to copy MMA style but to find a look that is modern and interesting.

hmm, some more intersting posts.. Keep em coming guys.

How about the Brand name and logo?

Does that really matter much to most people, or do they not care as long as its a quality product.

^ I don't believe the name has to be something catchy, but I do think the logo or the font is of some importance. If the product is built with quality the name will catch on in time.
