If there's one thing I've learned from being on multiple boxing forums, it's that boxing has the most gullible fans of any sport. This explains why they keep thinking Mayweather-Pacquiao will happen when it's been five years. If it was going to happen, it would have by now. This also explains why they keep falling for hypejobs, despite them being totally unproven. When that hypejob gets exposed, they move on to the next unproven fighter, and the cycle continues.
Or....maybe boxing fans are just optimistic? It's partly why we love the sport - it's not predictable and pre-ordained as to who will win or be successful in the manner that team sports are - hence getting behind prospects/hypejobs. There are no definitive schedules for when people will face each other, so we have to theorise on match ups. It also means that sometimes your enthusiasm is misguided, but that's the nature of the beast.
Agreed. Maybe that is why our optimism can be viewed as gullibility? It's a tough sport to follow because of the big disappointments - but is also the most rewarding at the most unexpected times too. Imam vs Maldonado a recent example.
When it comes to the best actually fighting the best, boxing fans do in fact seem to have a bad case of battered wife syndrome. As far as hype goes, thats not such a bad thing. Would be a pretty boring sport if every time some up and comer was heralded he did exactly what he was "supposed" to do, and pretty boring if noone was heralded as maybe something big.
there does seem to be a viscious cycle of stupidity within boxing but i think its part of what makes it enjoyable, its never really going to be any different. total lack of knowledge and some of the pure stupidness i read is aggravating though
I know it's overused but Roger Mayweather put it best... "Most people don't know sh!t about boxing" (Also can be applied to the political/buisness side of the sport despite Roger referring specifically to the physical art of boxing & people's historical knowledge of the sport)
You probably think the fight won't happen because Floyd is "scared" When actually, believing the fight will happen falls on the side of logic. Most people believe Floyd wins the fight if it were to happen, the fight is worth so much money, Floyd's wants are not the only ones to consider (it's what Showtime allows to happen) etc. So, it really has nothing to do with gullibility, it's simply that the fight happening is where most of logic points.
think most sports fans are gullible to some extent, if someone wins a could of games/ matches / fights or whatever in a row they get heralded as unstoppable and world class, then 1 loss their past it / overhyped or in team sports the manager needs to be fired etc. boxings no different possibly less so as its a minority sport.
