yeah a buddy of mine texted me after toney got destroyed and was like UF is better than boxing! i was like **** off mate niether are better than the other its like saying baseball is better than basketball. different strokes for different folks.
It's true, Dana seems to be looking at putting on silly fights that make big money, think to kimbo, as an example, but he soon got the boot, and Toney is done in MMA too. I'm actually a big fan of MMA but you know what, the UFC is actually becoming a bit of a merry go round. The divisions are in a bit of a rut because they are running low on title contenders. So much so that you got guys that aren't good enough to win the titles, but good enough to beat those below them. They are in a kinda purgatory. Now they are just going back over old ground, and some are getting instant rematches against the champs as there is a shortage of top talent. I think for the short term, they will just keep trying to put on fan friendly match ups, but the title picture isn't so significant these days. I guess as long as fans keep buying PPVs and showing up at events, they will do alright. But for me, it's grown a little stale of late, anyone else feeling this?
it really doesn't Proove anything, just like when Mercer beat Sylvia did that proove boxing was better. Everyfight will have a different result depending on who's fighting.
Yes very obvious. But at least he was able to make something of himself afterwards, right? I mean at least he was able to rebound from that loss and become the UFC champion! Oh, wait, you weren't talking about Brock Lesnar?:yep Wrestling > Boxing.
They aren't compeltely different sports. Why do people keep saying that. Boxing is an element of MMA. It's like making a sport that consists of baseball, basketball and football then Shaq, Beckham and Cansenco decide to enter it. What did we expect of this guy... This content is protected
I know right? another example would be Kimbo Slice beating the **** out of Ray mercer (and kimbo isnt really that good) Mma is much more entertaining though.
Generally, yes I think MMA is much more exciting. The fighters are hungrier and the low level guys have more options to overcome their shortcomings. However when you get two talented and elite fighters trading hard for 12 rounds, that **** is exhilirating and probably as exciting as it gets. There is a flow to it and a buzz that sends shivers down your spine over and over. Castillo-Corrales, Marquez-Vasquez, Gatti-Ward, you get the picture.
I think a lot of people are carried away with the image of MMA are being close to real life fighting. and obviously has huge appeal to the young who are the ones that generally get into fights. And also the blood and guts gore, is very exciting and entertaining. I wonder if I'm not beginning to find it a little boring now. once you've seen one massive gash blood everywhere, or a fighter poll axed you have rather seen it all. But the key thing is that MMA is plentiful and available to watch. it's got its faults but for a lot of people it's the only game in town. I remember the golden period of boxing from me, which was the whole Eubank, Nigel Benn, Watson period of the late 80s early 90s. all on terrestrial TV, watching the good fighers come up through the ranks. I don't want to be living in the past, even Sylvester Stallone and sugar Ray Leonard's boxing contender reality shows were absolutely fantastic in my view. It will be the best thing ever, if MMA manages to sweep away, the stinking pile of greed and corruption that boxing is buried it. Exciting six round boxing matches with hungry fighters are just about as exciting as any fighting sport gets. I think boxing can learn a huge amount from the way MMA is promoted. Boxing has not been counted out. Everyone is different, but watching two sweaty men grind against each other on the ground turns my stomach slightly. I'm just being honest, I'm not trying to suggest that those that like the ground game are homosexuals and I certainly don't have anything against homosexuals either. I acknowledge that the skill is fantastic, and the most effective in a real fight probably. The ground and pound also repels me a bit, as it does not seem to be quite cricket.
I watch Boxing and Mixed Martial Arts. One is far more pleasing to watch than the other in my mind, but they can both co-exist and indeed will. Neither sport will die in the foreseeable future.
No doubt, a much different sport. Just because Toney lost to Couture doesn't mean anything though. Couture is one of the best MMA fighters ever. Toney barely trained and fought a Hall of Famer the first time out. Had Toney started MMA 15 years ago he might be good. Let's not forget that Butterbean has had some MMA/K1 success and was a joke of a boxer. Botha was far from a technical boxer but has had some success in K1/MMA. A washed up Ray Mercer knocked out former Champ Tim Sylvia in 9 seconds but was beat by Kimbo Slice. Vince Phillips lost in MMA and now so has James Toney. All of these guys were way past prime as boxers when they decided to try MMA. Take a prime great boxer, train him seriously to fight MMA, put him in with lower level guys for a couple of years before fighting a top 10 fighter... then see how he does. I'm sure that type of boxer would do well.
