Honestly, a lot of you boxing fans are being very disrespectful to the company UFC, the MMA sport, and to the UFC & all other MMA fighters. I know you guys like boxing, but no need to be so disrespectful.
I started training at Gracie Academy about 6 years ago, and have trained in Vegas off and on for the last few years. Oddly enough, I'm more of a boxing fan than an MMA fan. ANYONE with skills, on any given day, can win a fight in MMA. Anyone who's caught with a bare-fisted shot can be taken out right quick. Anyone, even the best grappler, can have an off day, make a split second mistake and give up the arm to an inferior grappler and get tapped. You really can't make a single mistake with a black belt in BJJ and once they got you there is no getting out of it. With boxing, more often the better fighter wins. Plus boxers are giving up their health, the stakes are so much higher for them and boxing is so much more painful. I could never do it. Maybe that's why I'm a fan of boxers, but I don't really think of MMA fighters as more than dudes I roll with, who I get to see on TV now and then. Whoever said above that some karate magazine made up the distinction between grapplers and strikers, I LOL at you heartily. Rorion's entire point with UFC 1 was to show that in a real fight, grapplers own strikers easily. There has ALWAYS been a distinction in styles in MMA, that was the whole point of it from the beginning.
I see what you are saying. I respect the fighters because everything aside, they are still FIGHTERS, it takes alot guts to do what they do. But there is no denying that their striking is horrible. But **** the UFC. Dana White doesn't hold back when criticizing boxing. Haven't you noticed? UFC subliminally disses boxing when promoting their crap. They are the ones that coined boxing as a dying sport, Dana also talks smack about boxing PPV's. Joe Rogan constantly rants "this is why MMA is so exciting! this is why it is the dominant fighting sport! this is why boxing is losing popularity!" So **** the UFC.
Chuck has technique and the striking is not as crude as you think. The thing is, you can do a lot of things in boxing that you can't do in MMA. You can't keep a high guard and block punches in MMA, because you will get KTFO when that much smaller bare fist gets thru. You can't duck punches and bob and weave because you will get kicked in the face, or eat a knee. Slipping is dangerous too because all it takes is glancing contact to stun you with a bare hand, and if the other guy wants to take you down he can do it very easily when you're trying to move your head. In MMA you do your boxing with your feet, staying out of range until you're ready to strike, trying to stay aware of the kicks and takedown opportunities and vulnerabilities at the same time. Chuck is an absolute master of not giving you chances to hit him or take him down, an absolute master of avoiding takedowns if you DO manage to get hold of him, and brilliant at putting you away once he makes contact with his own shots. If you underestimate him, you better pray to god you never find yourself standing opposite him.
You got a point there man MMA guys always put boxing down. "thats old school man that wont get you anywhere". :-(
So because "A" criticizes "B", "B" is automatically right for criticizing "A"? I doesn't work that way, and the fact that you're using that method is pretty pathetic and childish. Second of all, almost everything Dana White has said about boxing is true. Yes, DLH vs Pac was a circus act and an embarrassment to boxing. Yes, Margo should be banned for cheating & all his wins should be questioned. Yes, the HW division sucks. Yes, a lot of boxing cards are weak and don't give the fans their money worth. See, he's telling the truth, not just criticizing. But once again, you said f_ck UFC. You're better than that, yo shouldn't stoop to that level.
To hear these guys talk, if a fight broke out in a bar, once the guys clinched they would stop watching because they would be afraid everyone around would think they were homos for watching at that point. I find this hard to believe. Yeah, guys, get over it. Some boxers clinch more and do less than lots of guys fighting on the ground.
I agree, but my I was trying to point out the irony of him being the most popular fighter but yet his fans will most likely think boxing is boring. It makes no sense to me that people watch MMA for the striking but won't admire boxers, when boxers at master strikers that make any MMA fighter look like an amateur. I've been at bars when these MMA cards are on and people get really excited when fighters stand and trade, but when they go down to the ground it seems to get really quiet. I just don't get it. Now there is some people that I know that aprecciate the ground technique (jui jitsu, wrestling, grappling) but that seems to be the minority. Now, why watch it for stand up? Hence layman - trendy fan that would enjoy a street fight just as much.
MMA is a great combat sport, but will never touch boxing. I love the art of hand to hand combat, so boxing is just the ultimate sport to me. Although, MMA is very entertaining in its own right. I prefer stand-up MMA fights, but the ground-fighting/submission game intrigues me too. Even though at times Dana White can be an obnoxious *****, I usually agree with his views. The guy is trying to promote his own organization. He's not purposely badmouthing boxing. Hell, White has a boxing background, long before he bought the UFC. He loves to watch boxing matches as much as we do, he's just trying to pimp the hell out of his organization. Hate the UFC if you want.. but they got it right. One champion per division. The best fight the best. PPV cards are stacked. Unlike boxing PPV's, UFC cards are actually worth the money. All the best fighters fight under one organization. None of all this Top Rank vs Golden Boy political bull**** stopping the best fights from happening. No crappy ABC belts and trinkets. No ducking allowed. Because Dana White doesn't care if you're one of his hot prospects; he'll still throw your ass to the fire against the best fighters. No record-padding and lame tuneups.
No problem with me . . . I watch MMA when there's no boxing. I love action and contact sports Judo; Tae Kwan Do and all sorts . . . but definitely boxing first. Don't complain about the ground action . . . different sports, different dicipline; different rules. :deal
Again, I absolutely agree with you. What Dana is saying is a matter of fact true, but those incidents don't represent boxing as a whole. It just seems to be that they are trying to kill off boxing. Constructive criticism is one thing but they promote off of boxing's mistakes. For example, like the last poster said, why call boxing an old school form and things of that matter. Or referring to MMA as "the new and DOMINANT fighting form" The reason I get defensive is because they are condescending to the sport of boxing. Key word "sport," since they always seem to used the argument of who would win in a fight? They are both sports with their respective fans. Both sports can coexist, but don't talk down to us boxers. :good
