Boxing guilt

I've actually thought that way about the Duran vs. Moore fight. From the 7th round on that was an attempted manslaughter on the part of the referee and Moore's cornerpeople.

 

I got pretty bummed after Benn-McClellan but nowadays I'm a lot more heartless.

 

Benn- McClellan was a phenomenal fight but the ending was tragic, i'd be lying if I said it didnt make me a little sick that a man was beatin to death. Boxing is a lethal sport, you have to realize that you could be killed in the ring everytime you step in it. Its not like a man is being beaten to a pulp against his will they accept this truth by choosing there profession. Duran vs Moore was a great fight, I'm a huge duran fan so its hard for me to not like that one

 

I frequently feel badly about it. In fact I've tried to quit following boxing a few times. It lasts a couple of months, then I come crawling back.

 

There are certain fights and events that make me feel queasy, and as a result I try to stay away from fights that end in death or permanent injury. I also prefer not to watch fights that are simply cruel to one fighter, where a guy is just getting the **** beat out of him over and over again until even the most bloodthirsty fan is yelling at the ref to stop it.

McClellan did plenty of despicable things, especially to dogs, but no one deserves to be mostly blind, deaf, and paralyzed. Neither does his family deserve to bankrupt themselves in order to try to care for him.

 

Yes it does make me feel intensely uncomfortable sometimes.

I can remember feeling grossed out during the fight between Nate Campbell and Ricky Quiles. Campbell had been beating the brakes of Quiles, who's health was already shaky from years of known drug abuse. The fight should have been stopped around the seventh. But then around the ninth Campbell turned it up to another level and things just got sooooo ugly. Campbell was blasting him with an endless series of headsnapping head shots. It was really ugly and Teddy Atlas was screaming at the ref to stop it. And for once Teddy's antics were fully justified.

 

this is kind of different but i remember watching calzaghe vs roy jones jr, feeling bad cause a legend like rjj shouldnt be in that position & calzzaghes cringeworthy taunting was just a **** take

 

Your second para I believe refers to Billy Collins jr vs Luis Resto; Resto's gloves had the padding removed iirc...

Resto's trainer was Panama Lewis, also in Pryor's corner vs Arguello, the "black bottle" fight...

 

I can't feel any guilt unless it's a blatant mismatch like Mike Tyson-Marvis Frazier...without boxing there are no sports to me, so I accept what happens and move on...after all boxing is the king of sports. And remember, no one twists anyone's arm to become a fighter and step through the ropes for that ultimate man to man test that we call boxing...all boxers know the risks.
