hi, does anyone here have any experiences w/a boxing gyms in las vegas? what can I expect to pay a month? what should i look for etc.? Thank you for your time -Aleksandar
There is Barry's Boxing with Augie Sanchez and his father in law Barry but I don't know what they charge anymore. Caters to guys who want to fight a lot. Recently I went to Round One Boxing because it was close to my house on Ft Apache and Sahara - about 350-400 a year. Taco's gym . The only one I thought sucked was Vegas boxing, which is like the fast food chain version of a boxing gym. Mayweather has a new gym but I haven't been in it.
round one is good in terms of the bags and the hours of operation, and they let you do what you want, but if you are looking for quality training and one on one advice you are going to have to pay for it. Lesme the trainer is a little beast and very well rounded in all combat mma style as well as boxing, but guys like Derrick Harmon and Winky Wright hanging out at the gym make it interesting and Harmon is cool as hell. He will work with you without killing you, but make no mistake that the man is very dangerous. When you see how easily he can destroy good fighters you will have a new respect for psuedo-journeymen type fighters.
Theres a decent gym behind Circus Circus Las Vegas but I cant recall the name of it off the top of my head. Ill check it out and let you know.
You might want to check out Johnny Tocco's boxing gym. Although he sold the gym just prior to his death, it's still privately owned and somewhat of a landmark. Think the fees are about $50 a month.
I just started training at Tocco's gym, and love it so far. It can get pretty crowded, but there's plenty of sparring and equipment available for the most part. It took a little getting used to the heat because it ends up like a steam room in there, but the atmosphere is almost untouchable. Yeah, the fees are $50 if you're 21 or over, $25 if you're under 21.
